The prestigious International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen 2023 has been awarded to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the People of Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyy received the award in person on behalf of the Ukrainian people.
The Charlemagne Prize is awarded for work done in the service of European unification. It has been awarded since 1950 by the German city of Aachen. It commemorates Charlemagne, ruler of the Frankish Empire, revered by his contemporaries as the “Father of Europe.” Charlemagne resided and was buried in Aachen.
Recent winners of the Charlemagne Prize include the Belarusian opposition leaders (2022), Klaus Iohannis (2020/21), António Guterres (2019), Emmanuel Macron (2018), Timothy Garton Ash (2017), and Pope Francis (2016).
“By awarding the Charlemagne Prize 2023 to both the president and the people, the Board of Directors of the Society for the Conferring of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen underscores the fact that Ukraine is part of Europe and that its population and its government representatives – headed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy – support and defend European values, and therefore deserve this encouragement to enter swiftly into accession negotiations with the European Union,” the statement by the board of directors of the prize said on Friday, 14 May 2023.
The classical music of Ukrainian composers, such as Myroslav Skoryk and Valentyn Sylvestrov, accompanied the award ceremony.
In his speech, Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, saying that Putin is a synonym for aggression.
“World leaders spent hours talking to Putin to avert this catastrophe. But Putin chose a disaster. Putin is the disaster. Putin is the aggression. His formula has become death. How do you talk to him?” Zelenskyy said after he received the Charlemagne Prize.
In her speech on the occasion of the Charlemagne Prize of Aachen 2023, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Ukrainians are laying down their lives to safeguard the future of their children and children of entire Europe.
“This prize embodies an obligation of the highest ethical value to make the next chapter of our common history better than the last. The person and the people that we are recognizing today have lived up to that obligation better than any of us ever could. They are literally fighting for freedom, humanity, and peace,” von der Leyen said.
In his speech, German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said that Ukraine paid a massive price for choosing a democratic development path and praised the Ukrainian people’s courage.
“The Charlemagne Prize expresses our European respect for the courage and determination of the Ukrainian people and Ukraine’s President. Russia’s war of aggression has brought the EU and Ukraine closer than ever before. Our history will be shared. Ukraine is Europe. Glory to Ukraine,” Olaf Scholz said.
The board of directors of the Charlemagne Prize of Aachen praised Zelenskyy as “a support and also a role model for his people” in Russia’s war against Ukraine.

I don’t think you realize Artyomovsk ( Bakmut) is now 99.8 percent under Vlads control, and Ukraine’s economy, industrial output , and infrastructure reads like an obituary.
Nothing wrong with Praying, but do note the German population also prayed hard during WW2. I see many similarities.
Does the current situation remind you of the September 2022 Kharkiv/Kherson offensives?
Last year Ukraine signaled a pending attack in Kherson. Russia reinforced Kherson. Ukraine’s attack in Kharkiv was easier since the Russians had moved troops to Kherson.
This year Ukraine is believed to be planning an offensive toward Melitopol or Mariupol. Has Russia reinforced that sector? Has that allowed Ukraine to make advances in Bakhmut?
I’d guess so.

This is what is giving the Russian command headaches. Ukraine can reasonably attack in a number of ways, and Russia will not have a clue until just before or right after it happens. Ukraine just has to follow through on what they said they can reasonably achieve to keep aid flowing. Achieving reasonable goals means a solid Ukrainian victory and a clear Russian defeat.
Down in the trenches, Russian and Wagner conscripts are not looking forward to what is coming. Especially when the last eleven months...

Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has said that Ukraine’s victory will involve more than just liberating all the occupied territory of Ukraine.

Ukraine slowly withdrew and let Wagner overextend and wear itself out while Prigozhin and the Russian command bickered. What is most likely happening is Ukraine's patiences is paying off and they are taking advantage of the situation Russia created, more than a part of the expected offensives.
Russian forces freaking out over losing a few square miles is making it worse for them.

Russian missile strikes on Pavlohrad MAY 1ST, 2023.
Ukrainian sources reported Ukraine’s air defense shot down 15 out of the 18 missiles launched by Russian Tupolev Tu-95 and Tu-160 strategic bombers on Monday night.
MAY 13TH-14TH The Khmelnytskyi Oblast Military Administration confirmed on Telegram that “critical infrastructure” had been hit in the attack on Friday night.
A wave of 21 attack drones were fired at the city, according to reports. “Unfortunately, not all drones were destroyed that night – 17 out of 21 UAVs. There are four hits in Khmelnytskyi region,” said Yuriy Ihnat, spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, per Mail Online.
The mayor of the region, Oleksandr Simchyshyn, wrote that “educational institutions, medical facilities, administrative buildings, industrial facilities, multi-story buildings, and private houses have been damaged” in the attack.
Simchyshyn confirmed that there had been civilian casualties. Local news outlets reported at least 21 civilians were injured
Then, of course the war-criminal Russians targeted their missles at Ukrainian city of Ternopil, home to Ukraine’s Eurovision Song Contest representatives, as the competition was underway Saturday evening! On Saturday night, another western city was bombed by Russia. Putin’s forces struck Ternopil, the hometown of Ukraine’s Eurovision contestants, the duo Tvorchi, moments before they went on stage for the international song contest in Liverpool.
Ukrainian forces intercepted and destroyed three missiles and 25 drones overnight.

Korniienko also informed his Estonian colleague about the current situation in Ukraine and recent missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. He stressed that Russia should be held accountable.

I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the four hundred and forty fifth day of the war.
Day 445: May 14
Today there is a lot of good news from the Bakhmut direction. Here, Ukrainians finally managed to starve out Russian troops in a salient on the southern flank and collapse Russian defense by multiple kilometers at one time.
Previously, I told you that after Ukrainians undercut Russians by moving along the canal and pushing Russians from their positions in front of Klischiivka, Russians in the forest were caught in the operational encirclement. Russian forces tried to resist for several days in anticipation that Wagner troops or Airborne units would conduct an unblocking operation.
Unfortunately for the Russians, the unblocking operation failed. Recently released footage shows that Russian forces tried to push Ukrainians from the tree lines in front of Ivanivske in order to secure control over the fields and allow for a safe retreat. Russian forces even sent a tank to help establish control over the field and also provide cover for the retreating troops, but it was destroyed by Ukrainian artillery already on the approach.
In the meantime, the problems for Russians in the forest exacerbated by minute, as Ukrainian artillery also managed to destroy several shelters with ammunition. It looks like Russians also lost connection and could not communicate with the mainland. As a result, when Ukrainians started their storming operation, Russians did not understand that they got completely surrounded and fought until they were eliminated. Today a Ukrainian fighter reported that they completely cleared the forest. Later Russian sources confirmed this information and also reported that they lost 2 colonels. One colonel was the commander of the 4th Motorized Rifle Brigade. Another colonel was second-in-command. Both of them died from lethal wounds, so the whole brigade is now with no high command.
Interestingly, Ukrainian fighters from assault units reported that they starved out Russians in the forest so much that during the storming operation, Russian mortar crews could fire at them only a dozen mines. A fighter from a different assault unit reported that they noticed a decrease in the Russian artillery fire on the flanks and speculated that the recent Ukrainian HIMARS strike demolished a lot of Russian artillery, so now they only have enough to maintain intense shelling of Bakhmut and Chasiv Yar.
Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense reported that today Ukrainians established control over 10 Russian positions around Bakhmut. The current setting indicates that Ukrainians are finally ready to start storming Klischiivka. In fact, the artillery preparation has already started. Recently released footage shows how a Ukrainian drone operator noted how 3 trucks delivered reinforcements to Klischiivka, which were then destroyed by Ukrainian artillery together with a small ammunition depot. Another footage shows how the drone operator spotted the second reinforcement at night, which Ukrainian artillery started shelling the moment the troops jumped from the trucks.
The Head of the Wagner Group, Prigozhin, recently published a video where he explained why the Russian Ministry of Defense is lying about the stability of the situation. He said that the Ministry of Defense is focusing on settlements instead of tactical positions, and in most cases in Ukraine, settlements are located in the lowlands and mean virtually nothing. So, while the Russian Ministry of Defense reports that Ukrainian failed to take Berkhivka, for example, Ukrainians are successfully moving along the tactical heights.
The same thing is happening right now on the southern flank. Ukrainians are moving along the ridge that goes from Chasiv Yar to Kurdiumivka. They have already established control over the forest and hills around the forest and east of the canal and are ready to storm two fortifications that are protecting Klischiivka. If this attack is successful, Ukrainians will control a huge platform that will allow them to attack downhill and cut Bakhmut from the south. They will likely open a supporting line of attack towards Kurdiumivka to fix Russian troops while moving towards Zaitseve and Vesele.
