The story is more than an week old. I just came across it, and thought it worth a post.

By the way, the Mariner's Church is the church referenced in the song. Lightfoot called it “The Maritime Sailors' Cathedral” in his lyrics.

What a perfect tribute.

Thanks for posting. In a shallow world, it’s heart-warming that meaningful gestures still happen.

I remember watching the news report that night – Eric Sevareid on TV as it was reported.

This video has some archival footage of Edmund Fitzgerald before it sank along with footage of what it might have been like when the storm hit, and footage of the discovery of the wreck. And most heart breaking the names, ages and hometowns and pictures of many of the lost crewmen.

I seem to recall that living in MD, we were struck by a NorEaster that November as well.

What a fitting tribute to the man who wrote that song and immortalized the memory of those men.

Good on em. Some decency still in this world. Lightfoot is one of the greats and his music always makes me feel things.

The church is not far from Cobo Hall, where Ronald Reagan was nominated for president in 1980. The building was named for Albert Cobo, Detroit’s last great mayor. However, because he was a Republican and therefore a rayciss, Cobo was “cancelled” and the building renamed.

A very good gesture. Gordon Lightfoot’s song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” was great. The haunting melody, the lyrics, the song made you almost feel as if you were on the ship.

Gordon Lightfoot memorialized the shipwreck.

I asked if this would happen on the day that his death was announced. I am pleasantly surprised that people made it happen.

I was able to see Gordon Lightfoot in concert three times. But the first time was when he was on tour just after The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was released. It was November 11, 1976. He announced to the audience that one year ago last night was when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. Talk about a powerful moment. I just loved his music. What a great storyteller.
