Update on the conflict in Ukraine for May 13, 2023:
- Russian media space panics over false claims of Ukraine’s offensive beginning;
- The trading of territory in Bakhmut is typical of urban combat operations and does not indicate a “momentum shift” until the vector sum of the fighting begins favoring Ukraine rather than Russian forces;
- Additional evidence has surfaced that Ukraine is using some of its best military hardware in and around Bakhmut including German-made self-propelled howitzers, indicating that Russian plans to draw in and destroy Ukraine’s best troops and equipment is working;
- Ahead of Ukraine’s offensive, both sides are conducting long-range strikes. For Russia it is about disrupting Ukraine’s offensive potential. For Ukraine it is about shaping the psychological and media landscape of the conflict;
- The Storm Shadow cruise missile is air-launched and for targets deep inside Russian territory to be under threat, Ukrainian warplanes must travel dangerously close ot the line of contact and expose themselves to Russian air defenses. The missiles themselves must circumvent Russian air defense systems and electronic warfare measures;
- The terrain mapping feature most likely will require intelligence sharing between Ukraine and the US-UK in order to make the missile’s use most effective;
- While Storm Shadow missiles and other long-range weapons Ukraine may have will inevitably make it through to their targets these are not capabilities Russia doesn’t already have and in greater abundance. If these are war-winning capabilities, Russia is going to win the war first;

Russian invaders ARRANGE provocations with explosions to justify their escape from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and the announcement of evacuation.
“Yesterday, there were at least two explosions in the town of Melitopol... We know that collaborators are not allowed to go, especially those who came from continental Russia. Everyone is ordered to sit until the last so as not to show that Russia is leaving the temporarily occupied territories. Therefore, collaborators arrange explosions themselves to show that they are being hunted there, and this is an excuse to leave the occupied territories. This is exactly what yesterday’s morning explosion is like,” Melitopol mayor Ivan Fedorov said during the national news telethon.
At the same time, Fedorov emphasized that the Ukrainian side did not even know about the collaborator whom they allegedly tried to blow up!
The Melitopol mayor noted that the second reason for arranging provocations is the need to find a good reason to announce further evacuation in other settlements.
“If we remember why they announced the evacuation of at least 15 settlements in the temporarily occupied areas of Zaporizhzhia region, the main reason was that it was allegedly dangerous there, Ukraine was allegedly shelling the civilian infrastructure. In fact, this is not true. That is why the enemies themselves began to shell the civilian infrastructure and hunt for some third-rate collaborators,” Fedorov noted.
As reported, in Melitopol on May 12, a garbage can exploded near the section of an apartment block where the so-called “acting deputy minister of construction” of Zaporizhzhia region lived.

From what I understand, Prigozhin advanced Wagner into Bakhmut beyond what the Russian MOD was willing to support, leaving the flanks vulnerable. Wagner kept advancing, Prigozhin kept begging for support, the Russian MOD ignored him as much as they could. Now there is a opportunity for Ukraine to hit the flanks around Wagner and retake Bakhmut.
This is what happen when your army is actually several armies, each having different political objectives, the leaders are no better than feudal lords with their own ambitions, instead of officers in a unified command.

An air group of two SU fighter jets (34 and 35) and two support helicopters flew over the Bryansk region to launch a “missile-bomb attack” (officially) on the civilian population of Chernihiv region in Ukraine. The air group was destroyed by “unidentified persons.” Justice, as it is, and instant karma: the aircraft must have been downed by Russians themselves. Russian air defense sometimes works and helps Ukraine to win!
The Russian state news agency TASS reported on Saturday that a Russian Su-34 warplane had crashed in that region but did not specify a cause.
TASS also reported an emergency services official saying an engine fire in a Russian helicopter had caused it to crash near the city of Klintsy in Bryansk, about 40 km (25 miles) from the border with Ukraine. The report made no mention of the Su-35 or of a second Russian helicopter crashing or being shot down.
