Think Liza Minnelli and Joel Gray in Carberet. Think West Hollywood, Greenwich Village and Provincetown and the Castro, known as hotbeds of homosexuality.
But they are nothing like the uninhibited urban gay sexual scene and vast homosexual subculture that flourished in Berliin under Germany's Weimar Republic.
Sexual experimentation between the same sexes and medical advances of helping genders ‘trapped within the wrong body’ in Germany more than one hundred years ago shaped our understanding of gay identity today.
The city's liberal years - before the rise of Hitler - are detailed in a new book, Gay Berlin.
The science of ‘transsexuality’ was founded in Berlin at the Institute of Sexual Science where the first male-to-female surgery was performed. The words ‘homosexual’ or ‘transvestite’ were German innovations. Male prostitution, homosexual bars and nightclubs, cabarets populated by gay men, lesbians and transsexuals flourished in a wild, incomparable sexual subculture that was exciting yet dangerous.
It was in Berlin where scientists concluded that ‘same sex love was a natural, inborn characteristic and not merely the perversion of a ‘normal’ sexual tendency’, author and scholar Robert Beachy writes in his compelling book, Gay Berlin: Birthplace of a Modern Identity by Knopf Publishers.

I see this a lot on Free Republic - that is, an acceptance of promiscuous behavior “as long as it is consensual”. The problem with this is it degrades society and pushes the whole country into its government dependent state with unwanted children, venereal disease, abortions, and more and more run down crime-ridden taxpayer funded housing and programs.
The nuclear family with Mom, Dad and the kids and the network of grandparents, aunts and uncles could be the bulwark and supporting structure of our nation if it were supported and promoted as the ideal it once was.
And of all the despicable characters in the movie, the one I came away hating the most was Magda Goebbels.
So what’s that other word, “glockl”? I’ve never seen it before, and it’s not in my German dictionary.
Does the umlaut change the meaning?
I knew "gluck" meant "luck". I didn't know it meant "happiness", but this word has an umlaut on it, and so I wasn't sure if it was "gluck".
Yes, she was something else.
I’m leaving the umlaut off because I don’t know enough HTML ...
“Luck” and “happiness” are very closely related concepts (in English, “good luck” and a “happy accident” are nearly the same thing).
As for the name of the bratwurst joint ... I admit I’m stretching the “translation”.
Homosexuality is where the SA, Brown Shirts, came from. It is also where the flamboyant outfits and parades originated too.
Gunter glieben glauchen globen.
Glocke (o-umlaut) is a bell.
Rise up, gather round
Rock this place to the ground
The “govt” is more out of control and it screws more people than any homo ever could
As a result of moneyed interests specifically choosing to keep discredited 175-year-old bowel movements alive.
Outlaw Marxism, and arrest and follow through on its American leaders -- which is what they fully expect anyway -- and the world will change overnight.
We could solve this problem within a year.
Was that while he was still in power, or after he became Hitler's puppet in late 1943?
The Fascist Grand Council ejected Mussolini from power in July 1943, but Hitler had him rescued from prison in September and reinstalled him as leader of Northern (Germany controlled) Italy. By then Mussolini was no longer calling the shots, but was only Hitler's figurehead.
“Only 6 million.”
My bad.
That looks like Dylan Mulvaney in 10 years.
Slightly more than half the total ... ignoring the other 5.5 million isn't right. I don't understand why it has become a common practice.
I remember reading in the 1970s that Hitler killed a total of 13 million people, 7 million of whom were gentiles.
