The articles pretty much miss the point of the Russian losses of ground at Bakhmut
What has taken place is that Ukraine is reducing two salients extended in an attempt by the Russians to achieve their playbook double envelopment of the Bakhmut city proper. In so doing, the Russian commanders were not able to defend against assaults on those salients that in effect might cut off the attacking Russian troops from the main and very old battle line. For the Russians, retreat was the only option
What is interesting to the world viewing the battle on video is the pitiful, devastatingly pitiful, condition of the vaunted Russian military. The Russian attackers are soldiers with small arms.
When the Ukranian counter attack began, a single tank with some infantry support just moved forward to the Russian lines and killed them. then sone Ukranian infantry moved up and killed stragglers. The Russian troops had absolutely no defense against the Ukranian tank that moved extremely close to where they were before it killed them.
At present, it is not known if the Ukranians will be able to remove the saleints and then progress further beyond the old long established lines. Since there is nothing strategically valuable beyond Bakhmut, some believe there is no need to push farther in that location.
One result of the pitiful Russian army performance is economically devastating. No one wants to buy Russian arms. All the world can see they are no good.
