Old story had Bud Adams, Oilers owner, fielding new names for his team for their move to Nashville.

"Look how popular those Volunteers are out of Knoxville. How when you shorten their name it rolls right off the tongue and fits easy on a bumper sticker - VOLS! We've got to make sure our new name does the same with one syllable."

"Er...boss, you know we're going with 'Titans', right?"

Oilers spent one yr in Memphis
before settling in Nashville and the
Estate of Elvis Presley tried to get
an expansion team in Memphis that would
be called the Hound Dogs. Memphis was
also a possible destination for the
Patriots—as well as St Louis with
then team owner James Busch Orthwein
trying to bring a team to his hometown

>>The Memphis Hound Dogs were a proposed NFL team in the early-1990s. Former Memphis Showboats owner William Dunavant, Paul Tudor Jones, Fred Smith and Elvis Presley Enterprises were the members of the potential ownership group—Wikipedia
