City workers in Phoenix finally began clearing out the massive homeless encampment known as The Zone on Wednesday although one city official has confirmed that there is not enough space in public shelters for those being moved.
A local homeless charity said that as of Tuesday night there were around 740 people still living in The Zone, with some having moved out already prior to the clean-up.
However, there are just 35 beds available in city shelters, reports the Phoenix New Times. Many residents of The Zone have said that they have heard that hotel rooms will be booked for them but most are scared that they will be left to roam the streets.
The Zone, which is seven blocks long and five blocks wide, is located steps from the state capitol building as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks' stadium.
The move to clean-up the encampment came following a judge's ruling in March after business owners with premises located close to the camp filed a lawsuit against the city, demanding its closure. The city is still planning to appeal the ruling.
The cleanup began at 7am local time on Wednesday. Officials have until July 10 show 'material results' in the removal of the site.
Officials have said that they have beds available for everyone being moved today, around 35-40 people, reports NBC Phoenix. Those beds are spread across shelters and hotels in the city.
Speaking to the media, the deputy director of Phoenix's Office of Homeless Solutions, Scott Hall, admitted that there are not enough beds for the 700 other residents of The Zone.
Earlier officials said that they plan to add 800 extra beds in city shelters by 2024.

I think I’ll take Phoenix off my travel plans this year. They have a great musical instrument museum, and while I doubt I’d find any of these creeps in there, the possibility of finding them in my hotel is pretty horrible.
Hoenix? Kinda like that.
Who gets to clean up the motel rooms?
That’s the question of the day!
And how many are illegal aliens?!
Hotels?
Ain’t there no room in Arpaio’s old tent city?
The average homeless person is white. Illegals tend to have places/family members where they can stay at.
The motel system in Phoenix can handle 700 people with no noticeable difference. Just choose one that doesn’t house the vagrants.
And what do they plan to do with the next influx of illegal aliens (who should be arriving shortly)?
