The J58 engine was key to achieving 3.6+ mach. Here's a link on the engine:

FTA: The Pratt & Whitney J58 (company designation JT11D-20) was a jet engine that powered the Lockheed A-12, and subsequently the YF-12 and the SR-71 aircraft. The J58 was a single-spool turbojet with an afterburner. It had a unique bleed from the compressor to the afterburner which gave increased thrust at high speeds. This feature caused it to be referred to as a turboramjet in some writings.

An amazing engine in an amazing aircraft.

The aircraft also had stealth characteristics.

Little trivia, but the Mig25 and SR-71 met over Israel in 1967, both you big guys spying on us as we (allegedly) went nuclear — and during a spat with our ever-so-friendly neighbors.

The SR-71 had a serious malfunction and the pilot wanted to land at Tel-Aviv (and we were fine once we figured out who it was and promised not to touch the plane or the pilot), but tensions were high and the CIA wanted us to all die, so they ordered him to continue on.

Luckily, he made it to Europe somewhere. I assume Turkey.
