Princess Leia arrived to the beach with Darth Vader, a scruffy Ewok and one of Jabba the Hutt’s hefty henchman.
Although it sounds like the setup for a joke you’d tell Greedo over drinks at the Mos Eisley Cantina, it happened 40 years ago, when Carrie Fisher showed up to Stinson Beach in Marin for a Rolling Stone photo shoot in the summer of 1983.
The magazine had reached out to Los Angeles-based photographer Aaron Rapoport to tackle the assignment. Despite windy conditions, a crowded beach and three costumed subjects lumbering through the sand, the shoot resulted in a classic cover photo and showcased Fisher at the height of her “Star Wars” popularity.
“Most of what drove it was Carrie herself,” Rapoport told SFGATE by phone, “because she was such an incredible person, full of positivity and energy. I have done a lot of cover shoots but this one was really different. It was very joyous.”
Amazingly, Rolling Stone only published two photos from the shoot, and the rest of the imagery went unseen for decades. Rapoport later excavated the shots from his basement to sell to Corbis around 2014, and the photos slowly found their way — through tweets, blog posts and subreddits — to “Star Wars” fans around the world.
Fisher died in 2016, but this week, she will get a (long overdue) star dedicated to her legacy on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on “Star Wars” Day — May the 4th. The story of her Stinson Beach photo shoot (as well as the photos themselves) speaks to the exuberance and personality that she brought to the screen through her films, as well as the challenges she faced along the way.

I read this story earlier this morning. I’ve been to Stinson Beach many times and you are right...the Pacific waters there are COLD, rarely above 60. It pains my feet horribly just putting them in the water. They don’t stop hurting until they get numb. She was really strong and brave to do that plunge!
It’s a great story about the photo shoot. It sounds like they all had great fun doing that shoot that day.
As most young people are..
“The magazine had reached out to Los Angeles-based photographer Aaron Rapoport”
I’m not Rapoport.
But don’t tell her that.
I’ve never seen “Shampoo,” but that’s a great scene. The first comment on YT is spot-on: “Her first film performance and she knocked it out of the damn park!! Incredible innate talent. 17 years old here... 17. and she more than holds her own with Warren Beaty. Her subtle intonations, body language, cadence. It’s worth a nomination. Brilliant.”
That look on her face and body language when Beaty leaves the room is fantastic.
She had her issues but she never had a penis. That’s good enough for me lately.
WOW....you’d think they would have chosen Hawaii...or at least southern CA.
I guess that’s one way of looking at it. She was 20 when she got the Star Wars part. She was chosen for her type, not for her range. She never became a great actress, but she was a talented writer and monologist who did a lot with her troubles and her family’s to make herself and other laugh. Many of her problems may have been related to her being bipolar, and she did much to make that condition better known.
Right. Skywalker Ranch is in Marin County (where Stinson Beach is) so maybe that had something to do with it? Maybe Lucas was hosting them all there.
No, but she could cut glass...

She was a writer and considered one of the top “script doctors” in Hollywood. She worked on many movies without credit.
In my opinion, she was an all-American beauty with an ideal girl-next-door look and her mother’s spunky, positive attitude.
She was also known for being a “script doctor” - re-working scripts for several well know movies, some without accreditation and writing for some sitcoms like Roseanne.
I recall an episode of Th Big Bang Theory with guest start James Earl Jones playing himself. He meets Sheldon who wants Jones to appear at the Comicon Sheldon wants to start of his own, and Jones turns out to be a bit of a party animal and takes Sheldon on several adventures including pranking Carrie Fisher who also briefly appears.
Surprisingly this was the first time Jones and Fisher had ever met in person. Upon meeting Jones, he said she ran up to him yelling “Dad!!!”

They probably had to go out to the ranch to pick up the costumes.
“WTF, Beach Blanket Wookie?”
No, that’s at the Obama beach house.
She was on a lot of drugs then. COCAINE. Watch the crazy Christmas Special they made, she ws completely high.
The boobs shrink a bit, but their pointers activate.
*sigh* no, yub yub.
Seems that is a common affliction of celebrities: Margot Kidder, Patty Duke, Linda Hamilton, Mariah Carey, Mel Gibson, Demi Lovato, Russell Brand, Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Ted Turner, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Vivien Leigh, Frank Sinatra, Sinead O’Connor, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jane Pauley, Amy Winehouse, Selena Gomez, Kanye West, Margaret Trudeau, Richard Dreyfuss. Even Winston Churchill is cited as being bi-polar. You have to wonder if they were bi-polar before they became celebrities, or was it their exposure to that world and lifestyle, that attributed to their bi-polar diagnosis.
