Who cares? Let's stop calling a spade a shovel. TKAMB was written by a woman from a well-to-do Southern Democrat family in an effort to exorcise her White guilt and to curry favor with her liberal peeps, Truman Capote among them.

If you want to pluck at the liberal public's hear strings and profit from the doing, there's no surer way to do it than to have some White crusader rescue a poor, downtrodden black person (or people) from the sinister clutches of an angry mob of White rednecks.

It's a cheap and tawdry literary and theatrical device.
