Sarasota’s Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium announced that one of its beloved manatees, Hugh, died Saturday at age 38.

After showing a behavior change Saturday, animal care staff at Mote monitored him before he became unresponsive in his habitat late Saturday afternoon, Mote said in a Facebook post.

“Hugh’s indelible and lasting legacy will be one of an invaluable contribution to the scientific understanding of manatee behavior and contributions to the conservation of his species,” Mote Marine’s Facebook post read. “Our team is forever grateful for the time we had with Hugh and his contribution to manatee conservation, and we are proud of our staff and volunteers for the level of care we provide to all the animals at Mote Aquarium.”

Hugh’s death comes less than six years after the world’s oldest manatee in captivity, Snooty, died from drowning at the South Florida Museum, which is now known as the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, in Bradenton.

RIP Hugh Manatee.
Reports indicate Hugh had the best record at predicting Super Bowl winners.

What is the average lifespan of Manatees?
To: NautiNurse
Well, let’s look at it this way, Hugh the Manatee lived LONGER than Mozart did…
To: SeekAndFind
50 to 60 years, up to 65 in captivity.

Hugh Manatee lived in God’s waiting room, Florida. Mozart lived in the other Australia, near the Alps.
