Study finds stool transplants more effective than antibiotics for treating recurring, life-threatening gut infections (C. diff repeat episodes treated better with transplant)
Medical Xpress / Cochrane Reviews / Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews ^ | April 24, 2023 | Aamer Imdad, MBBS et al

Posted on 04/25/2023 8:31:27 AM PDT by ConservativeMind

A study has found that compared with standard antibiotic treatment, stool transplantation can increase the number of people recovering from Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection, a condition that causes potentially life-threatening diarrhea. Within the study, 77% of people who received a stool transplant did not experience reinfection within eight weeks, compared to 40% of those who received antibiotics alone.

Transplanting healthy donor stool into a gut with dysbiosis is intended to balance the gut microbes and reestablish a healthy microbiome, thus significantly reducing the risk of C. diff recurring. The US FDA has recently approved a stool transplant product for prevention of recurrence of C. diff that can be administered as enema.

The new Cochrane Review, examined data from six clinical trials with a total of 320 adults that assessed the efficacy and safety of stool transplantation for the treatment of repeated C. diff infection. Most of the included studies compared stool transplantation with a standard antibiotic treatment using vancomycin, which is commonly used for this kind of infection.

The review found that stool transplantation leads to a larger increase in resolution of repeated infections of C. diff than other treatments studied, as well as a decrease in side effects when compared with standard treatment using antibiotics.

"After a person with a C. diff infection gets treated with antibiotics, there is about a 25% chance that they will have another episode of C. diff infection in the next 8 weeks," Imdad said. "The risk of recurrence increases to about 40% with the second episode and to nearly 60% with the third episode. So, once you are in this cycle, it gets more and more difficult to break out of it. Stool transplants can reverse the dysbiosis and thus decrease the risk of recurrence of the disease."

LOL

Patients should get to see a picture of their donor first.

Rebyota is the name of the fda approved formulation of suspended fecal matter from qualified donors(approved 11/22). The fecal material is screened for transmissible disease( yeah, like what?), but donors have no dietary restrictions. It is not screened for allergens either..(peanuts,gluten anyone?). Hope the donor isn’t a super hot sauce freak).
It is given rectally, NOT orally.
Probably pronounced (re-biota)...replenishing micro biota?)
It is indicated only for people who have not improved with antibiotics for C. Difficult infection.
Why can’t the geniuses at the drug companies isolate the effective fecal organisms from the stool sample, culture the orgs, and test those? S********e-it!
It has been successful for many, but(no pun intended) not all.
These sh*t shakes used to be given by nasograstic tube when first tried. Yuck!
There are gonna be lots of jokes about this...kinda’ like a “Uranus” headline response on steroids. Let me try one really bad one.

Bill: Hey Joe, why the glum look? How was your first day as the professional stool donater at the company?
Joe: I didn’t earn anything. My boss said I didn’t do sh*t.
Ka-thunk....

My dad had C-Diff. I did research back then in 2010. Doctor turned Holistic said Vitamin C was a MUST to treat C-Diff and stopping it from coming back because many times it reoccurs. My dad recovered! With Vit C

I had a C-Diff infection once. Nasty stuff. Luckily a week in the hospital and a course of Vancomycin cleared it up. Where would a processed stool sample for transplantation come from? I have already been told by family members to fugettaboutit.

Literally, anything that can stop C. diff is worth doing. Anything. My mother had it several times while we attempted to care for her in our house. Not fun...not fun at all. Poor lady.

I think I had my cdiff infection from a not properly sterilized colonoscope.

I got some kefir seeds and added it to some grass fed unpasteurized milk.

A day later I had some natural kefir. (not the junk in stores)

The real kefir is incredibly dense in vitamins minerals beneficial bacteria and fats.

Its also indescribably delicious.

“Back to leeches and maggots, it seems.”

I’ve heard that leeches are sometimes being used now. Something to do with clotting of the blood (IIRC).

So the old adage (and insult) "Eat Sh*t and Die", is just the opposite.
