REDDING, Calif. — Police arrested a man in downtown Redding on Tuesday night after he was found carrying a musket-style antique pistol, they said.

Just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, officials with the Redding Police Department said their officers were called to the Burger King off of Eureka Way for a report of a man seen walking around with a handgun on his bag. Officers said they responded to the area and contacted the suspect.

Police say the suspect gave them the name Ryan Battles, but he was later identified as Brandon Battles.

After searching Battles's bag, police said they found an antique black-powdered pepperbox revolver, black powder and iron pellets.

Ultimately, police said Battles was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. Police believe the antique gun was recently stolen and are asking locals if they recognize it.

That’s not a musket, that’s a pepperbox. A musket is a long gun.

Not only that, but a musket is a smooth-bore gun like a shotgun. Only long gun rifles have rifling.

I knew nothing about pepperboxes, so I went looking for info, and found this interesting video.

I'd be checking his parole status. Black powder guns are often carried by ex-felons due to a quirk in firearms laws.

From the ATF Website:

Because black powder firearms are considered antique firearms, the possession of a black powder firearm by a person subject to federal firearms disabilities is not prohibited by the GCA. However, a person subject to federal firearms disabilities may not receive and/or possess black powder firearms that can be readily converted to fire fixed ammunition by replacing the barrel, bolt, breechblock, or any combination thereof which are classified as "firearms."

Actually, a rifle with a bore of 40 inches or more is referred to as a “rifled musket”. An examples would be the Springfield 2861 rifled musket,

The little plastic bag seems to contain lead balls, and a black power measuring scoop. Add black power and small pistol percussion caps, which he may have also had, and you could shoot that thing.

Users put anything into a blunderbuss. With wadding that surrounds the ball, steel could certainly be shot from a black powder weapon.

I bought one of those years ago when we dabbled in buckskinning. It’s imported by CVA. It’s .36 caliber and has 4 barrels. I fired it once or twice. Very difficult to use. One of those .36 Colt Navy replicas is a much better choice if you want to mess with black powder. It’s a lot of fun actually.
