"The two maps show the aurora and viewline tonight and tomorrow night. The brightness and location of the aurora is typically shown as a green oval centered on Earth’s magnetic pole. The green ovals turn red when the aurora is forecasted to be more intense. Aurora can often be observed somewhere on Earth from just after sunset or just before sunrise. The aurora is not visible during daylight hours. The aurora does not need to be directly overhead but can be observed from as much as a 1000 km away when the aurora is bright and if conditions are right.

So you need to be lucky you are 1) at that right spot on earth and are 2) looking at the right time. That’s two mighty big windows.

Of course there’s a chance for an aurora tonight. It’s been pouring all day and tonight is forecast to be cloudy all night.
And no clouds.
I am indeed a lucky man (and I didn’t marry her for her cooking!)
People as far south as far Western KY were able to view the aurora last night. That’s pretty unusual.

It’s sooooo frustrating that thick cloud cover is almost a guarantee when there’s a chance for good aurora viewing.
Heh - I’m hoping or clear skies in my area (mid-south USA) for the 2024 eclipse. The meteorology says the odds are not good...
