Why did the safety guy not hit the destruct as soon as it started tumbling?

Why did the safety guy not hit the destruct as soon as it started tumbling? Mainly because it was supposed to "tumble" in order to get in proper position to separate from the booster. It didn't tumble much. And it did look like it had been self destructed. Lots of cheering in the video when it blew. Somewhat expected or anticipated?

As long as they were getting useful data from the rocket, better to let it continue failing. Failures tell you a lot more than successes.
