As long as they were getting useful data from the rocket, better to let it continue failing. Failures tell you a lot more than successes.

There are ways to avoid the “cult” problem.

Independent R & D teams can be created to address specific issues—starting with a blank whiteboard.

Of course at some point their findings need to be presented to the CEO—and the CEO can veto their proposal.

However, at least the good new ideas are on the table for consideration and are not shot down early in the process.

One thing struck me as very weird.

Yesterday they had an anomaly in the giant rocket that led to its destruction. Obviously there was some design, manufacturing or human error that went wrong and caused that failure.

Yet, here is the round-table discussing CRISPR, gene splicing and designing humans to be cancer-free as if nothing can go wrong with that tech.

As high-tech and technically challenging as rockets are, they are 0.000000001% as complicated as the human genome. To think that they can tinker with the human genome in perfect safety without making mistakes is ridiculous.

If you make a design goof on a rocket, you can build a new one and try again. If you screw up the human genome and it escapes into the wild, there is no turning back. It would likely be the end of the human race.

There is NO equivalence between rocket tech and human genome tech. Yet Musk and his participants seemed to believe “If we can do rockets, we can perfect the human genome.” That is the ultimate disaster waiting to happen,.

The person responsible for the destruct command would be allowed to wait until the latest time because of the information they were receiving, and at that altitude over water there was very low risk if destruct was delayed.

Yup.

For one thing they know just how much lateral and bending force the stack can tolerate!

I think the whole episode was fake in that the headline was not the subject and, as far as I got with the rambling, there was no mention of the “criminal investigation”.

Fake account. Just recently changed its icon to Tesla symbol. I reported them. YouTube needs a verification process for trademarked names and symbols. They should be liable.

Also, the chat feature is now trying to get viewers to send crypto with the lie that they will get their money/crypto doubled.

Anyone who falls for this will never see their money again.

Elon OWNS one of the biggest social media platforms which also supports video. Why would he use a competing platform to make such announcements?

This early in the Tesla-SpaceX “test-launch-verify-and-check-and-then-fix” strategy for this large a rocket, the launch crew (design crew) were very happy and well-satisfied when (1) all engines (and their frames and controls and hydraulic mounts) lit off and started and were under control.
Then even more satisfied when the rocket cleared to tower.
Then ecstatic when the rocket got through “max dynamic air vibration/air resistance”.

Failures and issues: The launch pad damage was excessive - Blown rocks and debris probably (near-certainly ?) damaged rocket motors and controllers before the assembly took off. A deflector shield and flame diverter, water dumps and better vibration and energy absorption will need to be installed. This was however, the heaviest test launch ever.

Stage separation, and tumbling need to be corrected. It’s not clear whether the lower stage started its “turn and fly back process” too early, tried to start it at the right time but the stage separation itself failed, or whether the tumbling occurred because of control or rocket motor damage already happening - back at the launch itself for example.
Or a “simple” physical reason - A jammed bolt or failed explosive bolt sequence that did not occur.

NASA - on the other hand - is scared of failure. Tries to over-think and over-simulate everything and so launches at 8 times the cost 1/4 as often and after taking twice the time. And their rockets still fail.

It could not be any other way. Imagine if one of them said “Low energy density, diffuse, intermittent power sources and battery storage simply cannot power an industrial economy. Nuclear power is the only answer.”

The control room would have had to mash the “End” button.

Maybe that’s what happened!

The rocket clearly had evidence leading to Hillary Clinton’s arrest and prosecution.

Repost of PIF’s grading of this effort, which I liked:

A C++ launch

Failure on the pad=F,
Failure at altitude= F— (as it would kill many),
Failure before Max Q=C,
Failure after Max Q=C++,
Failure after separation=B,
Failure after achieving orbit=B++
Successful booster landing A
Successful StarShip landing A++ and everything about space ventures changes instantly.

I think it tumbled a lot, like may 540+ degrees, and under what looked like full thrust. It was impressive that the structure held together the way it did. I bet the flight safety guys held off just to see what would happen, it was really high up at that point anyway.
