It sounds like him, so I can only believe that it's not a body double after all.
So, I surmise that the mass on his neck was providing a gravitational field and pulling down the top of his head downward, resulting in a mushroom shaped head. Once the mass on his neck was removed, the top resumed it's natural position and rose about 3" higher.
