California lawmakers want to know why billions in spending isn’t reducing homelessness

The state has spent billions of dollars on homelessness in recent years. So why is the crisis getting worse instead of better?

That’s what a bipartisan group of California legislators is trying to get to the bottom of by calling for a first-of-its kind, large-scale audit of the state’s homelessness spending.

The state has stepped up its involvement and investment in the crisis under Gov. Gavin Newsom’s leadership, allocating $20.6 billion toward housing and homelessness since 2018-19, according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office. But despite the influx of cash, during that time, the number of unhoused people in the state has increased by nearly a third — to more than 170,000 as of last year.

That discrepancy between what’s being spent in Sacramento and what voters see — tent cities in their neighborhoods — has many legislators clamoring for an accounting. They have instructed the state auditor to embark on a sweeping project that will analyze multiple state homelessness programs — as well as focus on homelessness spending in two cities — in an attempt to improve California’s response.

“What we’re doing is not working,” said Assemblymember Josh Hoover, a Republican from Folsom who co-authored the audit request with Democratic Sen. Dave Cortese of Santa Clara County. “And I think it’s important to get to the bottom of that and figure out where are we investing that is not getting a return on investment. And we need to stop spending money on the programs that are not working.”

The $743,400 audit, approved unanimously in the state’s legislative audit committee last month, will take about 5,000 hours of staff time and is likely to be complete by October, State Auditor Grant Parks said during the hearing.

Easy. You get what you pay for. You spend money on the homeless, you get more homeless. But I wouldn’t expect a Democrat to understand this. Or care.

I will do it for 9 million. Unfortunately we all know the answer is plain old graft, corruption and theft. Same reason the federal government spends trillions extra. If you cam steal million on billions spent then just add more zeros. Bam so easy a democrat can do it.

People aren't willing to do what it takes to help the homeless. Spending money is the last thing that will work.

When Guilani was mayor of NYC he said it was immoral to let people live on the streets. He would have officers travel with social workers to intervene and get these people to shelters where they can be treated and fed. Does it work most of the time? No, but it is far better than letting these people live on the streets in a pure hell to themselves and the innocent passers by.

Mental Institutions need to be reopened en masse as we live in a very sick society.

That which you subsidize you get more of. It ain’t rocket science, except perhaps to California politicians.

"The state has spent billions of dollars on homelessness in recent years. So why is the crisis getting worse instead of better?"

How could the government pimps make money if they did away with the homeless...

Homelessness pays, not for the homeless of course, but for the administrators.

And the same could be said for crime. What do lawyers and cops need but crime.. That's where the REAL money is made..

The money was never supposed to do anything about the homeless, it was just to pay non profits where a lot of friends and family work, and boy have they cleaned up.

For that kind of money you could grab govt land and put up basic housing complexes... of course, they’d immediately turn into crime infested sh*t holes... but that’s expected

Maybe the audit will determine the percentage of that $20.6 billion that goes for actual goods and services, versus bureaucrats, other third party “helpers”, and businesses/cronies. 10%? How much of the “services” costs are for unsuccessful mental health and drug counseling?

Because when you give free stuff to people all the time, they have no motivation to improve their lot themselves. There’s no reason to change when you make life too comfortable for them.

RE: Haha, they know exactly why and to pretend otherwise is just more BS.

Right.
Two possibilities always exist for wokesters-—
1) they are absurdly naive and think the socialist ideas work and
2) they fully understand they are out to torment and imprison and kill the enemies (all of us). The Chinese Communist style totalitarianism will allow no freedom to us and they know that already.

What is the split between those from other states, illegal immigrants, and those from CA who can’t afford housing.

Anything you subsidize, you will get more of. I can’t find a quote but seem to remember Rush talking about taxing the homeless. If you tax it, you will get less of it.
