Thanks, Pete! :)
Thanks for the tips. I’m in central Indiana but drive to Columbus (OH) frequently.
Thanks for the heads-up and the links.
I'll figure something out - even if it's planting peaches instead.
(Nah. I'll plant BOTH apples AND peaches.)
The Village Blacksmith
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - 1807-1882
Under a spreading chestnut-tree
The village smithy stands;
The smith, a mighty man is he,
With large and sinewy hands,
And the muscles of his brawny arms
Are strong as iron bands.
His hair is crisp, and black, and long;
His face is like the tan;
His brow is wet with honest sweat,
He earns whate’er he can,
And looks the whole world in the face,
For he owes not any man.
Week in, week out, from morn till night,
You can hear his bellows blow;
You can hear him swing his heavy sledge,
With measured beat and slow,
Like a sexton ringing the village bell,
When the evening sun is low.
And children coming home from school
Look in at the open door;
They love to see the flaming forge,
And hear the bellows roar,
And catch the burning sparks that fly
Like chaff from a threshing-floor.
He goes on Sunday to the church,
And sits among his boys;
He hears the parson pray and preach,
He hears his daughter’s voice
Singing in the village choir,
And it makes his heart rejoice.
It sounds to him like her mother’s voice
Singing in Paradise!
He needs must think of her once more,
How in the grave she lies;
And with his hard, rough hand he wipes
A tear out of his eyes.
Toiling,—rejoicing,—sorrowing,
Onward through life he goes;
Each morning sees some task begin,
Each evening sees it close;
Something attempted, something done,
Has earned a night’s repose.
Thanks, thanks to thee, my worthy friend,
For the lesson thou hast taught!
Thus at the flaming forge of life
Our fortunes must be wrought;
Thus on its sounding anvil shaped
Each burning deed and thought.

Thank you. I will be looking for one. Hoping to cross pollinate other apple trees.
She’s a great pollinator, too. Useful and Beautiful - what we should all strive to be in this world. ;)
Yes, I whole heartedly agree..
In Michigan at the moment... 80+ degrees yesterday... Snow tomorrow.... Gosh, I love Michigan weather...

Yep. SO much better than Hawaii weather, right? LOL!
Really cold nighttime temps for the next week, too. This will mess with fruit production for me this season, and the daffs and tulips won’t be all that happy, either! And, after grazing the steer for the past week, he’ll be barn-bound again which makes him cranky.
We got compost on all the beds, yesterday, so at least that’s done. We did need some rain (which we’re getting now) but this snow isn’t going to melt as fast as it should. :(
I know East Texas has azaleas...the soil there is more acidic, so that's maybe why they grow there...besides repelling skeeters & probably other bugs...the camphor smell!...are they good for anything else specifically? (I'd like to plant oaks...specifically live oaks - they are so majestic!)
Diana, have you ever heard of/seen the "Ellen White method" of planting trees? I ran across it awhile ago, and I'll try it when I get there!

Very satisfying.
I love watching them grow into woods.
Love that old cartoon!
I have not, but I’ll check it out. :)
