NFPA makes important safety codes and standards available for free online As part of its commitment to enhancing public safety, NFPA makes its codes and standards available online to the public for free. Online access to NFPA's consensus documents conveniently places important safety information on the desktops of traditional users as well as others who have a keen interest. NFPA is committed to serving the public's increasing interest in technical information, and online access to these key codes is a valuable resource.

To review codes and standards online: View the list of NFPA's codes and standards. Select the link of the code/standard # (first column). Once on the specific page, click the "Free Access" button located under the title. Use the drop-down menu to select an available edition. Select the "view" button. A new browser window will open displaying terms & conditions. Review and accept the agreement term to view the publication. Use the "Table of Contents" or paging buttons to view chapters/sections. Use the Zoom feature to increase/decrease the font size. Please note: You will be asked to "sign-in" or create a profile to access our codes/standards.

More than you ever wanted to know about wiring, fuses, circuit breakers and such.

That is how I remembered the resistor color codes 40 years ago.

I remember the color code but electrical code is a dictatorial method of gaining control of our lives, spy in us and extract monies out of our pockets through our government dictatorship. Why would everyone need and why would a national organization force new construction to have a charge station for an electric car forced upon them? Why are building codes so stringent and expensive that they make building a house too expensive for rural America? There are vacant lots near me where people tried to build their dream home but their dream was smashed by government “fees”/taxes.

Longer. And we played hot potato with charged electrolytics.

When I was in Santiago, Chile I was horrified about the utility wiring. It was like this:

The two biggest improvements in the last 20 years have been the requirement for GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) devices, and then the requirement for AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) devices. The AFCI can detect bad wiring that is sparking. Amazing stuff compared to the crude Edison base fuses which were was standard in my youth.

These codes are subject to abuse.

“why would a national organization force new construction to have a charge station for an electric car forced upon them?”

In that case, they are trying to get ahead of Democratic dictators. I think only the wiring is truly indicated at this time. The charging station could wait until the EV is purchased, and probably would be much cheaper in the future.

Codes should be more guideline oriented than dictatorial.

Bingo! And I own an EV, with a home charge station. I had my charging circuits installed in a way to optimize for my specific EV and my home solar. If a stupid regulation had put it in there it wouldn't be nearly as efficient for my situation. But the free market, which I wish the Dims would let us have, including with car choices and energy sources, lets us each pick what's best for us, including whether or not you have an EV at all.

Thanks for the free access to the NEC! I paid a lot for that in the past.

GFCI was appropriately put in in 1978 for my bathroom and garage.

I see it also appropriate for the kitchen, for which I believe it is now required.

Given modern insulation, AFCI is probably a step too far, at least for single family housing.

The NFPA is a private organization sponsored by the insurance companies. Their codes are “model electrical codes” that governments can adopt or adapt to local circumstances. Typical electrical inspections are simple checklist inspections, that vastly contribute to safety.
