In the clips shared to social media, masses of garbage could be seen charging down canals and storm drains, the water carrying it virtually invisible for all of the junk.
“These are the trash tsunamis of Indonesia and it will all end up in the ocean,” clean-up environmentalist Gary Bencheghib, who shared the clip, wrote.
“We can no longer turn a blind eye to these waves of plastic.”
“The trash is not the problem. It’s the people. If they don’t waste from the beginning, there will still be trash but maybe better managed,” another wrote.
Others called for a more constructive approach than shaming the people who had contributed to the trash.

They’re privileged in their culture, something that severely lacks in the U.S., plus they get to take naps at work, while also do daily workouts on the job to keep the work pace.
And therein lies the problem.
Just the other day I heard a black man lamenting the difference in culture between 'white' vs. black neighborhoods, that he personally witnesses daily his fellow race thoughtlessly discarding waste feet from a trash can.
If people have no self respect, they can't be expected to respect the environment. In this case, it's certainly not blacks.
So the real question: Is it poverty, race or culture?
As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words:
Poor white South Africans (Munsieville. Note the image of the trash actually 'in' the trash dumpster)
Poor black South Africans (Tembisa)
No, it’s gas stoves. Or something.
“The trash is not the problem. It’s the people.”
Liberal Cure = Ban trash.
Culture note history over the last 50 years.
The gun is not the problem. It's the people."
First is social pressure. Which you find in Japan and the US.
Second is legal pressure. Which you also find in Japan and the US. Fines for littering.
Third is for people to be unbelievably poor so the litter can be up-cycled into something valuable.
I do not recommend the third option.
It’s my fault because I am a middle aged white male American, although I have absolutely no desire to ever visit Indonesia.
Whole communities and over 250K people sucked out to sea during that thing. It had to go somewhere. I wonder why the climate 'experts' never mention that.
In a lot of the world you'll be a long time finding a trach can.
“But the US gets the blame for everything. It’s YOUR fault for eating meat and driving ICE vehicles!
That’s just Leftist tyrants blaming their political opponents for the world’s ills. Legitimate media sources don’t do their bidding.
Remember this?
From 'back in the day' when most environmentalists were about good stewardship and wise use.
What are these ‘legitimate media sources’ of which you speak?
Social pressure is perhaps the best thing going for us in the USA. Nobody wants to be thought of as a litterbug. Thus almost nobody will litter if other people are aruond.
As one who walks frequently around neighborhoods, I am distressed to see a lot of litter along roadways that do not have houses nearby. Much of which is empty beer cans, cigarette packs and those mini-bottles of liquor.
For there is even more of a stigma here with people driving while intoxicated. So people who drink in their cars on the way home will look for a remote spot to "dump" their evidence. As for cigarette packs, they probably don't want their spouse at home to know they are smoking so they will get rid of that evidence before they get home as well.
It is a huge problem down here in Florida. Too many transient people, from the homeless, to illegals, to renters, to tourists.
Used to be, in the 1980s, Oregon looked pristine and garbage free when they had 500 dollar fines for littering. It probably doesn’t look nice now that antifa is running amok occupying places.
Florida didn’t have so much trash back when we still had prisoners doing public service, but I haven’t seen prisoners working in years.
Singapore seems to have figured it out.
Oh, I thought it was referring you twentysomething women with their annoying “woke” travel blogs where they go to commune with the wild native people.
Not “you”. Don’t know where the hell that came from.
I wouldn’t mind “transitioning” into a 20 year old. But not if it means getting a sex change.
