"Shiveluch (Kamchatka): Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Tokyo warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 28000 ft (8500 m) altitude or flight level 280 and is moving at 25 kts in NE direction."

That’s a fact. Not good driving weather either if you’re in the path.
I had just started working overseas in 1980 when Mt. St. Helens blew and I had a co-worker who was from Spokane. His wife was telling him about how bad the ash was at home. A lot of cars died from ash ingestion.
I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near that Russian ash cloud in a plane.
