We shouldn't be surprised to see China and Taiwan in the news suddenly, whether as a distraction from Biden's criminal enterprises or because we are distracted by persecution of Trump. Either way, the matter is serious and poses the key question: Which do and will Americans pick? Cheap Chinese Products or Defend Taiwan.
We cannot do both.
What motives?
I hope I am clear.
We should not obsess about “Buy American”. We should tilt all trade policies away from mainland commies and toward products and services from Taiwan, S Korea, Japan, Australia and all of SE Asia all the way to India.
All those small Asian countries would rather be tied to the US than to China. We have a mutual need. Our foreign policy should be very pragmatic.
No real need to get stirred up over this. Show me someone who thinks the US, under the leadership of the current regime, can defeat China militarily in the Taiwan region. If you find such a person we need to try to help them cut back on the amount of weed they are smoking.
Gee take a pick, Cheap chinese crap or Chips from Taiwan to be able to build stuff here.
Taiwan is the largest investor in the mainland. Taiwanese companies ensure that the mainland is Taiwan’s biggest trade partner, with 25% of Taiwan’s trade being with the mainland.
Trade with the USA is a distant 2nd at 15%.
If Taiwan really wanted it should not have helped the mainland rise economically
“since letting us get away with it is in China’s best interest, then they probably will.”
Correct.
Both the Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China keep up the illusion of One China. They are tightly tied economically and getting more so. In a few decades they would merge as the PRC sheds the last pretence of being communist and keeps its Mandarin bureaucratic state
