Three brave officers who took down Nashville shooter Ashley Hale said they 'just wanted to save the kids' as they spoke for the first time since the mass shooting.
Transgender Hale, 28, opened fire with 152 rounds in just 14 minutes and killed three children and three staff members at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee.
Detective Michael Collazo and Officer Rex Englebert were the first on scene to rush into the school and take down Hale – who had positioned herself to fire at the police cars as they arrived on site.
Both officers remained silent following the shooting on March 27, but during a press conference, they opened up about their actions which saved dozens of lives.
They revealed that they had never worked together before that day, with Englebert explaining that they gave each other clear commands as they worked their way around the school.
Police Chief John Drake said that the officers went in 'immediately' because they 'just wanted to save kids.'
Hale murdered Hallie Scruggs, William Kinney, Evelyn Dieckhaus, all nine, and headmistress Dr. Katherine Koonce, 60, substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, 61, and chef Mike Hill, 61.
Detective Sgt. Jeff Mathes, who has not been identified before, is one of the officers who entered the school with Englebert.
Speaking at the press conference, he said: 'The smell of gunpowder was in the air. All of us stepped over a victim
'I, to this day, do not know how I did that morally. But training is what kicked in.'
Englebert then detailed that he got a call for a 'code 9000', which means an 'active deadly aggressor'.
He said that he had heard calls like that before, which were false alarms, but he knew that it was different.

Yup,lots of courage on display that day!
Yep. Whatever the defense is, it has to be there much, much sooner than 14 minutes.
Meanwhile four children in Brazil were just murdered by a man with an with an axe. No guns involved.
Good for the cops, but we cannot ignore that it has took 14 minutes for them to respond. How many people would’ve been saved if people in the school were armed to defend themselves?
Yup, advertise soft targets and you will continue to get these types of stories.
Put a sign on the door that says "Prepared to respond with deadly force" and these cowards will seek an easier target.
I bet it was a military style assault axe. you know all black with a compass built in to it!
I would agree with you to the extent that armed staff on-site is always preferable.
I’ll bet he could sense it.
Depends on the motive. That she positioned herself to fire upon arriving cop cars indicates she wasn’t that interested in competing with other school shooters for the highest number of victims, she was motivated by a noncompetitive desire to kill cops. Other shooters were on killing sprees to get attention, were angry, suicidal, drug influenced, etc.
But she may be an anarchist, with very political motivations. Her real targets were probably not random kids, but perhaps authorities, the police. If that is the case, the kids were nothing more than a means to an end, bait, the aim being to lure lots of police into rushing headlong into her field of fire. Maybe in her mind she was trying to go out as a leftwing hero, “righteously aiming to kill fascists.”
She was probably upset because in her youth “she was surrounded by happier kids who were all going to get what they wanted for Christmas.”
Officer Michael Collazo is a former **US Marine**.
Need more men like this on the police forces.
These police had balls.
So the cops acted like cops. Just as you would expect, if you knew the police officers I have known during my life. Don’t act like a hero until you have to, and don’t brag about it later.
