The frog was not dead but in state of hibernation. As it was in an oxygen rich environment it did not die. If he had dropped it in liquid nitrogen it probably would have expired.

Frogs can spend the whole winter underwater in hibernation without problem as long as the water is oxygen rich.

A naval ship cruising through the straits and Islands in the S Pacific. A very foggy night, suddenly a Japanese ship slices the ship in half. My dad is knocked down on the deck, but unhurt. He looks for his best friend from North Dakota, they joined the same day. Rode the rails to the place they could join the fight against Japs after Pearl. His buddies head he quickly found. It was saying the same two words it was saying as they sighted the coming collision, GOD DAMMIT, over and over. My dad didn’t joke, he didn’t lie. He told me that story shortly before he died.
