On one hand, it’s embarrassing that you never see developments by Americans anymore. On the other hand, these developments never seem to pan out at all.

Because most of them are nothing but marketing schemes and snake oil sales pitches.

When they go belly up, the investors cry to the government for bailouts and stand a good chance of getting them.

If Wall St or someone else doesn’t step up, then they run to Uncle Sam and find someone that will give them a loan or grant, something they don’t have to worry about paying back, and nothing. They get rich off the taxpayer and we lose...IE Solyndra.

I remember reading about an American university got a govt grant to develop some kind of battery technology and they ended up selling it to China.

Yeah, I’ve been associated with a U.S. National Laboratory and they’ve got ‘brilliant’ researchers (almost all Chinese ancestry) working balls to the wall on battery chemistry. But so far, just incremental improvements, no breakthroughs.
