The British lost 250 men and captured 12,278 prisoners, 5 civilians died. The Argentines lost 746 killed of which 368 had been on the Belgrano when it sunk.

The Argentine government quickly collapsed, a return to democracy quickly followed and many former Junta officials received long prison sentences as torturers and leaders of government death squads. Argentina then entered a period of political unrest and threatened and abortive military coups.

I enjoyed this blip in history. Principled machismo on both sides. Then there's Al Haig getting involved- his ego trying to solve it. The rest of Latin America acting like blacks who thought OJ was set up-sound familiar? Argentine Generals were about to lose power so they attacked, taking the peoples minds off their issues. Sound familiar again?

Hindsight is always 20-20. Was it worth it? The monetary cost was about $half a million per islander. A remote, bigger garrison required costing money. Islanders married soldiers to get away. Did Argentina prove it’s point in a loss? A moral victory? Now the Brits are unable to defend against another attack-defense cutbacks.

Part of Latin America going back to Spain? Was Argentina Spanish? They stole the Southern Hemisphere from somebody.

Studying the stories of South America’s navies gives an interesting entree into the continent’s post colonial history.

Conquests are never settled.

You can keep what you conquer as long as you are willing to kill those who dispute your occupancy until they give up the dispute.

There is no “right to exist” among nations. Only a right to defend, and a right to submit.

This is exactly what will happen to the Putin administration if Russia start losing in Donbas and Crimea. Putin will be arrested by new Russian leaders.

What is that? Some sort of gay ball?

I’m surprised the Brits didn’t win.

Then there’s the US. We were on the side of the Brits from the beginning-a racial element in there. Likewise, we’re in the mideast pushing our weight around. We’re hated-understand why? We wouldn’t let the Brits bomb the mainland but they bombed an airfield away from the capitol.

The issue will end up mineral resources. The Brits have the technology and won’t give them up. Self determination is too expensive for the Falkland islanders to have all the say. The solution is to have the US negotiate a 99 year transfer similar to Hong Kong. We can get a lot of benefits in those 99 years while both sides save face. Throw the Monroe Doctrine into the mix.

During that war, I would have breakfast (in California) with 2 friends and we would have several major newspapers, it was me, a WWII British Commando, and a just retired Senior Rear Admiral, and man did we have great discussions and analysis with a lot of enthusiasm.

Not much later I got to share training with SAS guys who were there, and one of them confirmed the problem that saw tooth knives can have in a fight.

The 1980s were hopping with Reagan and Thatcher.

Just like WWI, when we were never “neutral”, we were on the Brits side the whole time.

Of course it was OK for the Brits to enforce a Naval Blockade of Germany, and still expect the US to supply them and put our ships in harm’s way.

PM Margaret Thatcher ordered the Argentina battleship Belgrado sunk before it could attack the British invasion force.

The Brits had to rely on the intelligence agencies and satellites of the U.S.A. to “win” the Falklands war. We had to run them out of our country twice then had to bail them out twice and yet we continue to bail them out. It is a complete mystery to me why they continue to be supposedly our “friends.” The Brits are the scourge of the Earth and are why the whole world hates us.

Argentina invaded something that didn’t belong to them, encountered a resilient defender, and the era of Argentine greatness was finally ended.

At one time they were on the cusp of First World wealth and greatness but their culture doesn’t tolerate such things.

Sounds terribly familiar.

There was no racial element, remember our relationship, NATO and the Cold War, and Reagan’s strategy of bringing down the Russian empire?

Why go to Reagan being a racist because he did the normal thing, the right thing by every measure?

the whole world hates us

When then, are so many coming to the U.S. if they hate us? Billions of people would come if they could get here.

In 2014, BBC TV's Top Gear automotive/comedy show staged one of their usual send-ups in Argentina's Patagonia region. For the event, Jeremy Clarkson, the show's ringleader (and 'Moe' to their "3 Stooges") happened to have selected a 1990-model Porsche 928. This particular 928 -- which Clarkson himself selected specifically because it had a stick shift and not an automatic gearbox -- had worn the same license plane since bought new reading "H982 FKL."

The Argentinians are still so butt-hurt over the Falklands kerfuffle that some enterprising journalist claimed the car's license plate -- H982 FKL-- was a deliberate taunt over the 1982 Falklands 'war,' and a veritable lynch mob chased the show's three hosts (and the entire production crew) out of the country.

Lotus Esprit drive by co-host James May, its windows knocked out by stone-throwers.

Upper-left in this later photo is the same Porsche 928, it's license plate changed to try to defuse the tension (to no avail).

All three of the cars brought for the show (including Richard Hammond's 1971 Ford Mustang Match 1) were abandoned, confiscated by the Argentinians, and finally destroyed in 2021.

So props to the Argentinians for being sore losers and no fans of American muscle cars.

DIRTYSECRET is an agitator. He makes inflammatory remarks like accusing Reagan of being a racist then moves on to the next thread.

He is on record as approving of the Ashli Babbit murder on J6. To my knowledge, he hasn't recanted that absurdity.

It’s those that can’t come here that hate us. The elites have no reason to leave. They’re into grift and stay powerful by spreading hate on us. Think BLM.

*This is exactly what will happen to the Putin administration if Russia start losing in Donbas and Crimea. Putin will be arrested by new Russian leaders.* Very good-history repeating itself.
*It is a mystery to me why they continue to be supposedly our “friends.” The Brits are the scourge of the Earth and are why the whole world hates us.*My eyebrows opened with AndrewYoung suggested the Brits ‘invented’ racism. I still think of that quote as life evolves. The Irish supported Hitler-that’s why.

*the era of Argentine greatness was finally ended. At one time they were on the cusp of First World wealth and greatness but their culture doesn’t tolerate such things. Sounds terribly familiar.* Spanish colonialism worse than the Portuguese/Limies?

*Why go to Reagan being a racist?* Come on. He had Jane Kirkpatrick at he UN.

Oh Dan-Wichita. You are half right. I am a disturber of the excrement a la Trump.

APPROVE of Ashley Babbit’s murder? No no no. It gets back to the saying here posted often:play stupid games win....

Reagan a racist? Come on-too easy of you. Only leftists accuse our own of being racists. Kirkpatrick pointed out Latin sensibilities. Reagan listened.
