If it wasn’t for the Wabash river, I think I’d be going out of my mind
Thanks, I am from Indiana and did not know about this until now.
The Wabash River is an English transliteration of a Miami word meaning “water over white stones”, as its bottom is white limestone, now obscured by mud.0

And this was the perfect word for it.
We live near the world-famous Pecatonica River and there are Spring seasons that his, ‘Five Feet High and Risin’’ is spot-on!

[Verse 2]
Well, the hives are gone
I’ve lost my bees
The chickens are sleeping
In the willow trees
Cow’s in water up past her knees
Three feet high and rising
Nice!
My father and grandparents lived on Kaskaskia Island in the Mississippi in the 1930s. One year they went through that. My grandfather took the family to Missouri by boat and then went back out to stay in the house in the middle of the river and keep an eye on things.
That was brave! The Mississippi can be unpredictable at best! We’re about an hour east of her when you cross over into Iowa from Wisconsin.
Had family in Lafayette. Been there a few times myself.
Didn’t go fishing. Didn’t see Johnny Cash. Didn’t write a song.
Sounds like he was either at the Levy or Tippecanoe Park.
It was the Great Depression, and Grandpa did what he had to do to keep what they had. Outside of the flood hazard, Kaskaskia was a good place to live: rich soil for farming, and plenty of fish and game. But people got tired of being inundated, so almost no one lives there now.
Lot of things in Indiana named Wabash - Wabash Trailers - The Wabash Cannonball - Wabash County - Wabash College - it is a real Indiana name
Nice to hear some real country music again...
