In 1993, I had the honor of shooting a geological compendium video, in a tiny and extremely remote Bolivian desert/dry mountain village, south of La Paz. It was likely a total population of 300-400 and the men were all miners, born into it until they died. The church/school, taught by the women, was catholic influenced and most of the residents had never ventured outside their little world here. There was radio for the workers but no TV. When I arrived, looking like a poor man’s Indiana Jones, with a huge tube camera with 3/4” video deck recorder and tripod, all of the little uniformed school kids ran up to me - and surrounded me as I set up outside the truck. I looked at the two dozen cute faces and, in my best Spanish, said “Hello! I’m from the United States of America and this is a camera!... I am, how do you say?... an Ugly American!”
They all giggled and it was cute as hell. I’ll never forget that little slice of adventure in Bolivia.
