On its website, Everytown Research & Policy cites 306 mass shootings in the U.S. since 2009.
"4 shooters out of over 300 mass shooters since 2009 are transgender or non binary. That's just 1.3 percent of all shooters," Anthony Zenkus, a lecturer in social work at Columbia University, wrote on Twitter. "You just proved our point: 99 percent of mass shooters in the United States are cis gendered."
According to the Williams Institute research center, around 0.6 percent of Americans over the age of 13 identify as transgender.
First , the comparison to be made is not how many mass shootings since 2009, but how many mass shootings in the 4 years and 7 months between the first and last trans-identified shooters in Johnson's tweet (Aberdeen to Nashville—9/20/18 to 3/27/23). According to Wikipedia, the number is 78.
Second, Williams Institute cites the number of trans-identified persons in the U.S. ages 13+ as 1.6 million.
The U.S. Census Population Clock lists the population at this hour as approximately 334,560,215.
Ergo, the percentage of the U.S. population that identifies as trans is .48%—less than 5%.
Further, there is no breakdown in the 1.6M Williams Institute number of trans shooters of how many were actually taking hormones, fully transitioned or post-surgical. Since they count persons from age 13, logically, many are not fully transitioned or even taking hormones for any length of time; the lone female may have been receiving aggression-enhancing testosterone.
In conclusion, the percentage of self-identified trans shooters (4) out of 78 mass shootings cited in the tweet is not Newsweek‘s claim of “just 1.3 percent of all shooters,” but approximately 5%.
Compared to the percentage of trans-identified folks in the population (.048%), the recent 4 trans-identified U.S. mass shooters is a possible ten times the percent of trans-identified persons in the U.S. population.
