JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office homicide sergeant has been arrested after he punched a referee in the face during a children’s soccer game, according to Sheriff T.K. Waters.
Sgt. Michael Russell, who has been removed from his position in homicide, was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of battery on a sports official, Waters said at a news conference.

Ping!
Pong!
Ping not pong 😏
A co-worker of mine is also a referee after hours.
He tells me he has more trouble from PARENTS than the players.
Was even attacked by a MOTHER of a player one time!
But he’s a big guy and just walked away..................
It’s only soccer.
Parents are definitely the worst when it comes to their kids sports team.....they all think their son is the next tom brady, mark maguire or Michael Jordan.
This cop here?........what a dumbazz.
It’s a new sheriff.....he may wanna make an example of this knucklehead.
This idiot may very well have flushed a 14 year career down the toilet.
I occasionally work with a forty-something man who is massively constructed. If you wanted to start a fight, he would not be your first choice. He had been asked back to help coach a Peewee League ball team. His goal was not to win, but to develop each player to the peak of whatever that player could be. One day he pulled out their top pitcher while they were winning to give another pitcher some experience. The first pitcher’s father went ape-$hit on him. The other fathers had gathered around and leapt in to retrain the father when he swung a punch. My buddy just stood there the whole time and made no move. My point is that parents can act irrationally. After that the good pitcher’s mother dropped him off and the father was never seen again at a game.

“battery on a sports official”?
Well, I guess you can now tell how much you’re worth to society by the penalties that apply if a member of your group is “battered”.
I wonder what the penalty is for “battery on a software engineer”. Probably just a small fine, or a stern talking-to. :-)
Had my experience with T-ball parents in the 80s....of all the levels I coached at they were undoubtedly the worst.
Got so bad the coaches had a meeting and unanimously voted to stop keeping score......whst did some of the parents do?......kept score in the stands of course. SMH

God bless him! We need more like that in kids’ athletics.
Up until high school and then let ‘em go scorched earth. Because sports! (Nothing turns out parents at a school board meeting like coaching beefs.)
“(Nothing turns out parents at a school board meeting like coaching beefs.)”
A subject that touches a nerve to be sure.....so much so that Dr. Phil did a show on it just last week.
The panel was made up of coaches and player parents......the finger pointing was epic.
And it all boiled down to the almighty dollar......what a shocker right?
Attacking referees in many cases exposes the parents living vicariously through their children.
I think sports officials get special attention from law enforcement for this very reason.
Unfortunately it’s not uncommon for a ref or umpire to get attacked.
But attacked by a 14 year police veteran is a bit unexpected.....this guy should be ashamed of himself and state so publicly.

Looks like the sheriff is getting rid of a bad deputy down there.
I bet he didn’t get any for a while.
1You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times.
2For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

How messed up is it that we have to have a law specifically about hitting a sports official?
Decades ago, I think it was kid pitch league (1st thing after t-ball), the league provided a home plate umpire and the home team provided a field umpire who stood between 1st and 2nd, a little deep.
Well, I was that ump, and made a call regarding the “1 base on an overthrow” rule (this is still little kids after all, and you’d have lots of home runs if you dind’t have that rule), and the opposing coach didn’t like it. This led to a 15 minute suspension of the game while we got him to back down from being a butthole and accept the call.
The league official in charge of umpires and rules reviewed the situation while the game was in play, and told me right afterwards I made the right call.
The only thing I regret about the whole experience is that I didn’t eject the opposing coach about 10 minutes into his tirade.
