A cup of wild blueberries a day may keep low energy at bay. The berries have long been hailed as a superfood. While they're known for a plethora of health benefits, new research proves this superfruit could help burn fat during exercise.
The study, recently published in the journal Nutrients and the first to examine wild blueberries' fat-burning effects during exercise in non-elite athletes, suggests that wild blueberries may help accelerate fat oxidation—the process of breaking down fatty acids or burning fats for energy.
The study included 11 healthy aerobically trained males. Each was instructed to follow a diet that included consuming 25 grams of freeze-dried wild blueberries (equivalent to 1 cup of raw fruit) daily for two weeks. Participants exercised on a bike for 40 minutes. Researchers collected urine and blood before and after cycling, and blood samples every 10 minutes during the workout.
Results showed participants burned notably more fat after consuming wild blueberries. For example, fat oxidation rate rose by 19.7%, 43.2%, and 31.1% at 20, 30, and 40 min after cycling.
Overall, the research found that consuming roughly 1 cup of wild blueberries daily for two weeks increases the ability to use/burn fat during moderate-intensity exercise, like cycling.

I love blueberries and I wish that claim were true, but I have not found it to apply to me.

Blueberries are oligosaccharides with a low sugar content. The study’s authors don’t even mention that little factoid even ONCE. It points heavily to a gut function, something about which I write extensively.
You can get the same effect by eating unripe bananas. In fact, there’s a banana ‘diet’ out there somewhere.
Blueberries taste better but stick to organic, for GUT FUNCTION/health, NOT for ‘weight loss’.
There is no excuse for obesity for most people.
Lots of fat Alaska natives. So, not so sure about this one.
My local grocers charge like $7.99 for a cup of blueberries, so I’d be skinny but broke.
It’s not the wild blueberries. It’s running from the bear who is also looking for the blueberries. And that also helps with any problems you have with slow bowels or difficulties urinating.
Studies conducted at the South Dakota State University show that freezing blueberries makes their powerful antioxidants more available to the human body. This is because anthocyanins, the antioxidant compounds that make blueberries blue, are found in the skin of the berry.
Several studies suggest that blueberries contain the highest amount of antioxidants among all commonly consumed fruits and vegetables.
Drinking milk along with blueberries might lower the potential health benefits of blueberries. Consuming blueberries 1-2 hours before or after drinking milk might prevent this interaction.
Acute Consumption of Blueberries and Short-Term Blueberry Supplementation Improve Glucose Management and Insulin Levels in Sedentary Subjects
Background: Blueberries are polyphenol-rich fruits with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Polyphenols from berries act by blocking digestive enzymes, reshaping gastrointestinal microbiota, and affecting the release of gastrointestinal hormones to regulate insulin dynamics and glucose management. However, most studies use fruit extracts instead of fresh fruit. We aimed to evaluate postprandial glucose management and antioxidant capacity of fresh blueberries consumed acutely or as a six-day supplementation in 10 sedentary subjects.
Couple of years ago, I made a 3-week trip to New Zealand, and discovered a smoothie drink called the ‘Blueberry Bomb’. Came in a 3/4 liter bottle. I was probably drinking one of these almost every single morning.
By the 10th day, I’ll just say that my blood sugar rate (lows in the afternoons) changed, and there were zero constipation issues.
they also taste better than the farmed blueberries.

Except that the gut bacteria will adapt to sugar and junk food to make you crave it and the brains will rewire for sugar and junk food to make you expect it.
Another study that’ll go nowhere and accomplish zero
I started eating a habenero a day for a while, lost weight pretty quick. Can only do it from NOV-APR. Summer ones just too hot.
One of my friends has several bushes of wild blueberries. Unfortunately we live far apart and visits have only happened at her twice in 6 years. Those berries are small but very sweet.
You can find frozen wild blueberries on sale for between $3 to $5 a pound, if you look a little.
Costco has them for $3 and Kroger has them for $5.
The going broke is how you get skinny.
I got some freeze dried (non-wild) berries a while back. Too sweet for me.
