“Where was the Vietnam War fought?”

Trick question. It was LOST in Washington DC.

I noticed that too....

And I also noticed how pudgy and soft all the “males” are in this video. Embarrassing.

They were a first step. I don’t think they were meant to be a final end product as they really didn’t establish much in the way of a fully fleshed out federal government.

Did they ask them, "Who washed Washington's wash, when Washington's...you know the thing"?

Why remember something that's not relevant. It's a waste of brain space.

Yes...I went to school...learned all that stuff...I'm 79...yet to use it for any purpose. It becomes trivia in the real world.

Technically, it wasn’t until 1814 and the Treaty of Ghent.

I disagree. The younger generation's ignorance of the basics of American history is an existential threat to America. To survive as a nation and preserve our way of life, it is vital that our citizens know and appreciate our heritage.

They know the basics...If you need it...look it up. That’s how today works.

Which is basically the problem. Students looking stuff up does not teach them how to think, normally or critically. Its the same as always having open book exams, you get worthless waste products, who graduate and get the same degrees that older generations had to work their butts off for.

They know the basics

The ones in the video most certainly don't.

I strongly agree with E. D. Hirsch, author of the bestseller Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know (Boston: Houghton-Mifflin, 1987) that cultural literacy is essential to American survival. Every American needs to know about major historical events and trends, our founding fathers and founding documents, how our government works, etc.

Can you name all the people who signed the Declaration of Independence? Can you tell me what each did and which state they represented. Of course not...

All everyone remembers is Columbus, Washington, Maybe Jefferson...that why we have books!!

So for you, it doesn’t matter if our young people don’t know what we celebrate on July 4, whether or not the Vietnam War came before the American Revolution, or the importance of 1492, 1620, 1789 and 1865. I most vehemently disagree. Young people need a solid grounding in cultural literacy in order to make wise choices and to avoid being swayed by the fake news that permeates the airwaves and social media.
