Use of melatonin linked to decreased self-harm in young people (About 50% less)

Medical sleep treatment may reduce self-harm in young people with anxiety and depression, an observational study suggests. The risk of self-harm increased in the months preceding melatonin prescription and decreased thereafter, especially in girls.

Melatonin is a hormone that controls the sleep-wake cycle and is the most commonly prescribed drug for sleep disturbances in children and adolescents in Sweden. Melatonin use has dramatically increased in recent years.

The study identified over 25,500 children and teenagers between the ages of 6 and 18 who were prescribed melatonin in Sweden. Over 87 percent had at least one psychiatric disorder, mainly attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, depression, or autism spectrum disorder. Self-harm was about five times more common in girls than in boys.

The researchers estimated the risks of self-harm in the same individual while on or off medication by comparing the risk in the last unmedicated month with the twelve months after melatonin treatment was initiated. By doing so, they were able to take into account background factors that might affect associations, such as genetics, sleep disorder severity, or psychiatric disorders.

The risk of self-harm increased shortly before melatonin was prescribed and decreased by about half in the months following the initiation of treatment. Risk reduction was particularly evident among adolescent girls with depression and/or anxiety disorders.

"There is currently a youth mental health crisis, and the risk of self-harm and suicide is high," says Sarah Bergen. "Our findings support the hypothesis that sleep interventions may reduce self-harm in this population, especially in girls."

As it was an observational study, it cannot establish a causal relationship between melatonin and reduced self-harm rates. To check whether the use of other medications might have affected the findings, analyses were also carried out which excluded antidepressant users. The results were similar.

Thank you for sharing about the Dr and the EEG. He knew you were a left brain logical thinker by the abundance of Beta wave activity in the prefrontal cortex. This never develops in many people, and when it does develop, it is the last part of the brain to develop, usually between ages 18 and 25.

The musical ability is a bit harder to determine as it usually is reflected by a synchronization between Beta and Theta frequencies of consciousness. Music is both logical and emotional.

The action potential firing rate of the neurons in the brain are represented by the wave patterns in an EEG. Specifically, it is the firing rate of the pyramidal neurons.

Think of the firing rate of spark plugs in a car. As the engine runs faster or slower, the rate of spark plug firing changes accordingly. Different parts of the brain fire at different rates.

In the brain, Delta frequency is very slow, conception to age 2. Then Theta frequency from age 2 to 8. This is the developing emotional child brain frequency.

Then the Alpha begins about age 8 through age 14. This is a logical masculine frequency. It begins around third grade when the brain develops the ability to do multiplication and division. This frequency of consciousness helps a person develop a self identity and facilitates individuality. This age normally ranges from age 8 to 14-ish, but these are approximates. Each soul is different. Some people never go any higher than this.

Around age 14, the prefrontal cortex develops as brain frequencies get as high as 30 Hz in the Beta frequency. This Beta frequency provides high analytical abilities. It usually is not fully developed until age 25.

My research primarily deals with the gamma frequencies which are the frequency ranges of the mystics. (Above 40 Hz). Science didn’t even know they existed before 1964 when EEG equipment was updated. The old analog equipment could not read these high frequencies.

I’ve jammed FM receivers with high frequencies of consciousness in meditation. That’s in the mega Hz. I don’t think there is an upper limit.

Our perception of reality is a function of the frequency of consciousness from which we view it.

At higher frequencies, consciousness and the contents of the human soul (consciousness itself) becomes physical and directly observable.

Transcendence, a person’s ability to perceive directly with their consciousness beyond their physical body begins at 40 Hz. This is the lowest frequency of mystic abilities.

FYI... I know TMI!

Science will soon discover what I am saying. I learned it by seeking to understand my own perceptual changes after my NDE.

The EEG in the psych research lab at the university helped me the most. I then went on to study neuroscience to understand the physical attributes of the spiritually mystical soul.

I haven’t published any of this as my guidance in meditation at the higher frequencies instructs me that it was not time yet.. for over 30 years I got that message.

Recently that has changed and I am now preparing a book and public lecture for May. I teach the science of religion, without discounting either. Just by taking people to a higher level of understanding of both science and religion where the two merge together and support each other.

Long term inadequate sleep will cause psychosis. Melatonin helps you sleep. Melatonin is not a magical drug. It just helps you sleep.
