The mayor also added a video of the dive on his account, saying that the man and his accomplice who took the video will be arrested. In the video, the person, wearing only boxer shorts, can be seen jumping from a building rooftop into a canal, landing on his belly.
“We are trying to identify him, to report him, him and his buddy below who made the stupid video for social media,” Brugnaro said.
The mayor also said he sent police to the building to determine how the man was able to enter the private residential building and how he was able to get to the rooftop.
“He risked his life in that jump, but he is also a delinquent. They don’t understand the danger they create in this city. What if a boat would have been passing below?”
Brugnaro urged anyone who has seen the video to help identify the person – who he referred to as a tourist – but not to “like” the video on social media.

Here is an Italian joke in here somewhere...
It’s not just jumping into the water from the third story that is the problem. That water is a sewer. He basically jumped into a septic tank without any protection what so ever.
Thats the first thing i thought of
Katherine Hepburn almost lost her sight because she, to play her part, fell into the canal three times when she was filming Summertime in 1955. The water was probably cleaner back then, because it wasn’t full of drugs or infections like it would be now.
Was a boat passing below?
well no... but what if?
Check the hospital admissions. He’s the one with cracked ribs needing massive antibiotics and antiviral interventions.
The authorities in this case sound like they have a gondola rudder stuck up their backsides.
Besides, those canals are open sewers anyway. Hope the guy had his shots.
So this is how the ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ begins, not with a whimper or a Chinese lab leak, but a social media video?
I’ve been to Venice. Once was enough. I preferred Florence and Rome.
The roads are tiny and not built for anything with wheels (even bikes). There are so many connection bridges with stairs you have to walk or boat everywhere.
The water in the canals is not fit for swimming and is only about 16 feet deep. Despite being shallow, it is so murky in places you cannot see more than a few inches down.
Most of the homes on the water have small passenger boats and there are ferries running constantly. This moron could have taken out not just himself but others.
Italy is a beautiful country with amazing food. Most Italians are polite, friendly people who conduct themselves in a civilized manner.
They are not amused by jerks who disrespect their homeland.
Have you been there? The water is not a sewer.
I agree with everything you said. He should honestly receive a ban from the country, if they can find him.
The 16 feet was probably sufficient to break his fall, but he’s likely going to bring home a few infections that will have to be treated by a few months of antibiotics. That’s my man concern for him.
Instant karma if he does.
Serves him right.
This author disagrees with you. It’s unfortunate that the canals are part of how they dispose of waste, but the city cannot be renovated so easily to install a modern sewage system.
It’s dirty water, even if you can kind of see in it.

Definitely.
Check out balconing: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balconing
You know how kids go to Miami and drink and act crazy stupid on spring break? Well, young and crazy stupid Brits starting jumping off balconies trying to land in the pool in Magaluf, Spain. Lot of sad endings.
The Viennese authorities are trying to nip something similar in the bud, not over-reacting.
The water is far cleaner now.
People have childish views of Venice. It’s nice and it’s surrounded by huge waters. The tides in and out constantly refresh the waters. I’ve been there twice, including in Summer and never smelled the water or saw the slightest hint of sewage.
The murkiness is caused by all the boat traffic stirring up sediment just like it does anywhere else. Which was demonstrated when the waters became clear during the covid lock downs.
As for other complaints here that the roads aren’t for vehicles and there are lots of bridges - uh Venice.
Why anyone doesn’t love history, water, boats and bridges in a gorgeous setting is beyond me. But to each their own.
And it’s really not sinking, or has been for 1000 years and isn’t going anywhere soon.
