‘Very intimate knowledge’: What Ron DeSantis saw while serving at Guantánamo
Miami Herald ^ | 03/07/2023 | BY MICHAEL WILNER

As a young military officer at the height of the war on terror, Lt. Ron DeSantis was often seen running on the beach of Guantánamo Bay and along its ridgeline, encircling Camp America. It was a chaotic time at the U.S. military detention facility in Cuba, and as an ambitious Navy lawyer, DeSantis was positioned to witness history up close. He arrived at Joint Task Force Guantanamo in the spring of 2006 as its leaders were grappling with multiple challenges and global scrutiny. Aggressive tactics were adopted to break a hunger strike. An armed clash erupted between detainees and a riot squad in May. Three men were found dead in their cells in the same hour of a single night in June. And the CIA would transfer some of its highest-value detainees to the camp in the fall of that year. DeSantis had little authority to address these crises as a 27-year-old lieutenant at a notorious facility micromanaged from Washington. But it was a formative period for a career-minded officer who had enlisted hoping for a deployment to Guantánamo Bay, where he would come face to face with the realities of America’s least conventional war.

Now they’ll accuse him of war crimes. Watch.

In another twist, DeSantis could give a hoot about our J6 detainees.

Liberal MSM sources produce hit pieces on DeSantis, and Trump supporters broadcast them. Politics indeed makes strange bedfellows.

Love the: “Screw DeSantis, he never spoke out against the indictment that didn’t happen” nonsense. I give him props for tagging the effort as a political hit job, which it is, but not feeding into the drama that is the President Trump soap opera.

If President Trump cared about his supporters he would not have called on them to protest. It’s entirely predictable what would happen, another January 6 with anyone who even thought about taking part having his/her life destroyed by the Biden Gestapo.

Sadly I agree.

The more I see of him, the more he comes across as inauthentic....

Based on the polling trends, I’d say I’m not alone.

Interesting article. Doesn’t show a bias either way.

If detainees don’t want to eat, don’t force them to.

My big issue on DeSantis is that he professional politician.

The article pretty much supports that statement.

As he said, he was a Junior Officer. He could not “direct” anything.

And...I thought the folks around here were all about treating the prisoners at Gitmo poorly. And, there are some here who believe that many of the enemies of the Dear Leader are actually prisoners at Gitmo.

You cannot have it both ways.

Presidents don’t go anywhere after their term(s). Not since JQ Adams, at least.

What I take away as an intelligent observer is that Ron DeSantis was a politically motivated individual who saw a value to military service.”

Just because someone puts on a uniform for years does not mean they served the country. Plenty of ways to serve without being in military. Some non military people in our history been extremely helpful to our country.

“”He has worked in government his whole life, from being a JAG out of law school, to present.””

This is a new thing accusing people of being in government their whole life because of serving in the military.

Being a vet used to mean something in America.

Maybe by one definition but service to a country can take many forms. Like
our leaders are meant to be public servants to the citizens - no uniform or military required, plenty of others who serve the country and do it outside military. Any one of service to God (truly doing as God would have them do) and a citizen of USA is in service to this country HE allowed us to have.

Re: 18 - Come on, traitor is over the top.

President Trump has a record of disrespecting military service to make personal attacks, but in the process besmirches other vets. This is what he wrote about McCain in 2015:

“He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

That’s tough (and ignorant) talk coming from someone who never served and had the chance to do so, bone spurs or no. If someone wants to serve in the military - they can serve.

I wonder what President Trump would have had to say about Admiral James Stockdale. Or Jeremiah Denton. Or James Risner. Or Humbert Versace. Or Floyd Thompson.

Being a vet used to mean something in America.

Being a vet means something, until it doesn't and until it can be used as a weapon for political or personal advantage.
