Endless weeks of nice weather allows a significant amount of oil to collect on street surfaces. The first rain displaces the oil in the pavement with water and the oil floats on top. The surface becomes very slick and dangerous. It's bad for any driver. Slower reflexes at age 97 just magnifies the problem.

Yes, here in Texas, during our hot summers, after many days of 100+ temps, then a sudden short rain storm (not enough to wash the roads just wet them), I start listening for sirens as there will be some accidents.
