NICK MASON, ERIC CLAPTON AND MORE WANT ROGER WATERS’ BAN REVERSED Allison Rapp Allison Rapp Published: March 21, 2023 Andrew Redington / Ethan Miller / Gareth Cattermole, Getty Images SHARE TWEET Play Nick Mason on Amazon Music Unlimited (ad) A new petition calls for the reversal of a recent decision made by a city council in Frankfurt, Germany, that canceled an upcoming concert by Roger Waters.
The Pink Floyd co-founder was scheduled to perform on May 28 at the Festhalle concert hall in Frankfurt. The city holds a 60% ownership share of the venue. The council described Waters as "one of the world's most well-known antisemites," citing Waters' boycott of Israel and his comparisons of Israel to apartheid South Africa, among other things. The decision was later praised by the Central Council of Jews in Germany, which released a statement encouraging other German venues scheduled to host Waters to do the same. Another concert, set to take place in Munich on May 21, was canceled shortly afterward.
The new online petition, launched by American political pundit and comedian Katie Halper, has been signed by various artists, musicians and actors. Waters' former Pink Floyd bandmate Nick Mason, as well as Eric Clapton, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and Tom Morello have all signed the petition. "The officials vilifying Waters are engaging in a dangerous campaign that purposely conflates criticism of Israel's illegal and unjust policies with antisemitism," a petition summary reads. More than 10,000 signatures have been collected so far.
Waters and his lawyers have stated that they intend to invoke legal action in order to overturn what they described in a statement as "unjustifiable" decisions regarding the cancellations. "[This is] to ensure that his fundamental human right of freedom of speech is protected," the statement said, "and that all of those who wish to see him perform, are free to do so in Frankfurt, Munich and in any other city in any other country."
The controversial singer and songwriter has been accused of antisemitism before. Most recently, Polly Samson, the wife of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, posted a tweet calling Waters "antisemitic" and a "Putin apologist.” Gilmour retweeted the post, adding, "Every word demonstrably true."
In a statement on his website, Waters firmly denounced the recent decisions by the German government and ensured that he has no plans to exclude Germany from his This Is Not a Drill tour.
I can’t decide whether Roger Waters or Neil Young is the biggest d*ck in rock music.
Definitely Waters.
Clapton was great on Waters’ “Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking”.
Why limit the choices to those two pukes.
More nominations are welcome.
And Amused to Death, I believe.
That was Jeff Beck (RIP).
Ah. Yes, RIP.
Bruce Springsteen tops them. Plus his music sucks.
Yes.
I don’t know if this is to his credit or not but Roger Waters is an advocate of the Paris human rights agreement and talks about it quite a bit during interviews. He’s at odds with his pink bandmates in that they’re socialists and don’t really care about the state of war the globe seems to be continuously in.
That’s it in a nutshell. I’m not a fan but he certainly must be rubbing global governments the wrong way to have been labeled as a menace and persona non grata.
His interviews are filled with tension as he calls the interviewers to task on their opinionated questions.
I probably wouldn’t invite him over for tea, and I think the debate doesn’t really suffer because of his beliefs, in fact I think The debaters and hosts would generally rather not have to think outside of their boxes and the viewpoints of Waters makes them very uncomfortable.
Neil Young hates America, Roger Waters hates the world.
Ethically I think Rodgers is the better of the two even though he’s ethics are called into question by the globalists which might not be a bad thing.
One sticking point that Waters adheres to is the Paris human rights agreement.
I think Neil Young sticks to the fact that he’s Neil Young and you’re not.
Hate speech has no place in music. Sorry Roger, the people have spoken and you are an antisemitic piece of crap.
To answer the question of who is the biggest d*ck in muic, my vote goes to Elvis Costello.
“I can’t decide whether Roger Waters or Neil Young is the biggest d*ck in rock music.”
Elvis Costello
Well, he’s an anti-semitic, but I don’t like cancellation, especially by a government. Roger, that fascist you like to play? That’s your fantasy, not that of the people you hate politically.
>> This is not a drill <<
No, it’s a hammer. We understand you. Too well.
Yeah, I know. That's a character... but it's a character whose back story matches his exactly. And while songs like "Waiting for the Worms" used to be just plain confusing to me, his later work suggests maybe it simply is his fantasy, or at the very least, projection.
I bet Waters wishes he could take back the line “There were Arabs with knives at the foot of the bed” from that album...
Maybe, maybe I could get by his antisemitism, maybe
But what the he calls music, never!
Well, Waters loses my support when he starts up with his, “It’s all the fault of the Jews,” BS. He sounds like Louis Farrakhan lite many times. He repeats the same tired tropes—Jews controlling politics, being obsessed with money, being bigoted, apartheid state, etc. I find it tiresome and offensive. That said, I’m unlikely to put away my Pink Floyd records because of it. Cancel culture is for the emotionally stunted.
You’re unlikely to change my opinion and vice versa. I feel differently than you, and I’m OK with that.
