SAN FRANCISCO (TND) — A member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors who previously called for "defunding the police" is outraged after city officials allegedly told her there are "no officers" to send to her district.
During a Budget and Appropriations Committee hearing last week, Supervisor Hillary Ronen voiced frustration that the city's police force appeared to be prioritizing retail theft over the safety of the residents in her district.
"I've been begging this department to give the Mission what it deserves in terms of police presence, all year long. And I've been told time-and-time-and-time-and-time again there are no officers that we can send to Mission. And then I see these numbers protecting shoppers, and it hurts. It hurts. And I feel betrayed by the department, I feel betrayed by the mayor, I feel betrayed by the priorities of this city," Ronen said during the hearing. "It is not this board of supervisor's priorities -- we want our residents safe."
But Ronen's comments have been earning her loads of criticism considering her stance on "defunding the police," which she shared in the wake of the murder of George Floyd.
"I want to make it clear that I believe strongly in defunding the police and reducing the number of officers on our force," Ronen tweeted roughly three months following Floyd's death. "For decades we've had an imbalance in our city's budget, with hundreds of millions of dollars going to SFPD to have them do work they are not qualified to do."
Ronen was a loyal supporter of former San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, who was recalled last year in reaction to rampant violent crime in the city. Boudin was frequently targeted by critics for his allegedly soft-on-crime policies.
The city has faced a strong wave of both property and violent crimes recently. Overall crime has been consistently increasing since pandemic lockdowns began.
San Francisco's Mission District, which is located in Ronen's district, has been hit particularly hard, according to residents.
"This can't go on like this. It's just getting worse," Oscar Gonzalez, a small business owner in the Mission District neighborhood, told CBS News. "There has to be a positive change."
Gonzalez told CBS News that, after 10:00 p.m., the streets are extremely dangerous.
"Closing early helps them a lot. It is less dangerous for the employees here because some girls have to leave alone," he said.
"The situation in The Mission is terrible," a local patron named Guadalupe Hernandez added. "It's sad. I remember 21 years ago when I came to live here, and The Mission was so pretty, but now everything is ugly, sad, dirty."
The National Desk (TND) reached out to Ronen's office for comment, but did not hear back. If a response is received, this story will be updated.

Biden Claims Republicans In Congress Are the Ones Who Want to 'Defund the Police' (Wednesday, 15-Mar-2023)
George Floyd was the bad guy.
The police are the good guys.
Get a clue.
Too bad, so sad.
Zero sympathy for this dumb broad.
She is reaping what was sown. That’s how it works. That’s why its in the Bible - there’s nothing new under the sun, people.
She won’t back down on defunding the police as she demands more police. A human being would admit to maybe being wrong and apologize…
What a moron.
Every San Fran cop should quit. Let the citizens live in their liberal utopia.
Ronen’s father immigrated to the United States from Israel in his twenties. Her mother was a school teacher.[2] She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, San Diego and her Juris Doctor from University of California, Berkeley.
American Cheka member in good standing.

Eat huge sacks of shit. Seriously.
Re. my tag line.
She reminds me of those jackass videos on youtube. Here hold my beer, I’m going to vote to defund the police and see what happens.
Two of my cousins are retired police officers and two of my nieces are married to police officers in the town I live in.
Yes they have a hard job and I've made comments here at times that were less than flattering of police officers but I wouldn't want to live in a world without them.
"I just turned 42, joined the gym, Im the Supervisor of District 9 & am about to kick ass addressing homelessness in SF, kicking out those Republicans a-holes in Congress, preserving the rich culture & people of D9 & still being an amazing mother & partner. Happy New Year!"
