... The Florida governor seemed to go out of his way to emphasise the tawdry origins of the potential crimes being investigated, even while denouncing the investigation itself.
That could be a sign of how Mr Trump's presidential rivals handle a possible arrest and criminal trial for falsifying business records and state campaign finance law violations.
But even oblique attacks risk attracting Mr Trump's attention - and ire. And it wasn't long before the former president fired back at Mr DeSantis.
"Ron will probably find out about this sometime in the future when he's unfairly and illegally attacked by a woman (or possibly a man!) with false accusations," he posted on his social media site, Truth Social. Mr Trump later deleted the post and replaced it with a lengthier response. His campaign team also sent out a press release criticising what they painted as a tepid response from the governor.
Mr DeSantis had been under pressure from Trump supporters to defend the former president and denounce the prosecution ever since Mr Trump speculated on Truth Social that he would be arrested on Tuesday.
"Pay attention to which Republicans spoke out against this corrupt BS immediately and who sat on their hands and waited to see which way the wind was blowing," Mr Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr, tweeted on Sunday.

Yes. Major disappointment. Someone, I think Bannon, said it well: this isn’t DeSantis, this is Paul Ryan and Jeb Bush talking. We don’t need either one of them running for president.
If he has, I've never heard of it. It doesn't show up in any of the typical profiles I've seen or heard about him.
i think we have gone beyond gentlemanly/ladylike niceties. we are in an epic fight to save the integrity of our system. after years of R’s being Mr Nice Guy,yielding sway over education, elections, family/marriage, the Constitution, other important areas to aggressive Dems, we are at a crossroads. i want a general with a war plan, not a politician with an agenda and cronies to satisfy. i have lost all illusions and am wholly enlisted in this fight.
I am not so sure that is correct. Trump’s calculation seems to be to force declarations of support so as to inhibit rivals from exploiting his pending indictment and arrest. And it seems to be working, so far. Trump looks solid in the polls.
THIS!!! No wonder Republicans aren’t winning! Everyone needs to refocus on the Democrats and what’s happening today with Bidens’ policies and not on each other. There is a time to debate each other and that is during the primaries. There are a whole lot of us out here that just want our country to get back to peace and economic stability without all the pettiness.
“Everyone needs to refocus on the Democrats and what’s happening today with Bidens’ policies”
Yes. Emphasis on “TODAY”. This alleged Trump arrest is a squirrel they’ve let loose as a distraction from something else, IMO.
Unlike Trump, DeSantis does not have an easy natural touch with people
Being a Florida resident, he’s a great governor, but also he’d be better as a VP to learn under Trump.
He could simply say its a travesty what the Dems are doing to a man who has done so much for our country.
Nuff said, and instant street cred....
Whatever one says about Trump’s take-no-prisoners style, he takes the gentleman’s agreement out of politics and replaces it with a knock-down drag-out fight that reveals what the candidates are actually made of.
I am gradually becoming a fan of this style. It’s like making sausage (in that we don’t want to see it being made) except our nations leadership is more important and we need to see the interior of the process.
Bingo. Too many fake manufactured sound bites instead of plain old street talk.
Trump exposed the “ club” and they had to get rid of him before the “ sheeple” really saw who they are interested in.
What’s his strategy???
To appeal to the base while appealing to his deep state handlers.
See Romney, Mitt for clarification.

I did read he was a teacher for a short time. If this was a public institution, I’m guessing it was a government job also.
I’d like to know
Desantis is shooting himself in the foot, and is utterly oblivious to it.
He’s listening to the establishment and nevertrumpers, and is doing himself real long term harm.
Absolutely and we are all busy arguing amongst ourselves and wasting time. Democrats are the enemy, not Trump or DeSantis at this time.
If it wasn’t obvious, I don’t care what Trump said.
Or what you think.
His strategy? To do what his billionaire backers tell him to do.
"I have no interest in getting involved in some type of manufactured circus by some Soros DA," DeSantis said.BREAKING: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Finally Reacts to Donald Trump's Potential Arrest [03/20/2023]
A Trump-DeSantis ticket would probably be barred by the constitutional prohibition against the President and Vice-President being from the same state.
Trump is the only one who can take shots at people.
This is nothing new. Trump is “rage farming” and engaging his base over something that hasn’t even happened. Trump always likes to dish it out but doesn’t want to take it. He’s always wronged when criticized. It’s never justified. This endless political food fight shows it never been about policy and MAGA for Trump. It’s all just a Trump reality show for entertainment purposes.
Trump did it first.
Boo hoo.
Screaming about a snide remark after months of overt Trump insults. And constantly defending his unprovoked insults as “tough” to boot. Bring it up and it’s irrelevant to them. Hypocrites. And sycophants.
If anyone kept insulting them publicly like that they’d punch him in the mouth.
Let me guess, you started 2016 pulling for Jeb?
