“.... he yells and walks away...”

little does she realize when ‘Marvin’ walks away - he’s walking back over to his telescope at the window on the 20th floor of their condo and adjusts its lens pointed down towards the pool below...

:)

Statistically, females outlive males by several years. My elderly parents use to rent a condo in Florida during the winter. All their friends in the area are now dead or have dementia.

"Don't You Want to Play This Game No More? (Sartorial Eloquence)" by Elton John, off the "21 at 33" LP.

You can hear the actual dedication with song here. You were probably tuned into good ol' WDRC in those days.

Long Distance Dedication

And how does that fit into your take on this letter?

No way would I establish Florida as my home of record...mainly because of the heat and humidity. Income tax,and sales tax, free New Hampshire for seven months a year (close to home turf,my family and world famous medical care) and Florida from 11/1 to 3/31 to avoid the cold.

When I think of Casey Kasem I think of that tape of him once going ballistic when taping a show *and* the free-for-all that broke out in his family when he was sick and when he died. He was just another worthless showbiz phony.

Yes, the plumbing company that we use hired a plumber from New York City. He was an excellent plumber but so nasty that we referred to him as Mr. Grump (behind his back).

He was so hard to deal with that I asked the company to send somebody else--not him.

However, after a few years in the South, he began to metamorphose--as most of them do--into an almost likeable human being--even developed a glimmer of a sense of humor.

For example, when I called him to unstop the sink, I said, "My wife put pasta down there--and she said she doesn't want to hear the lecture," I saw a little smile dance briefly across his countenance. (Previously he would have grumped.)

It's the story of the South. Yankees move there. They're nasty, humorless, difficult to deal with, unlikeable--in a word: yankyfied. Then when they've had time to acclimatize, they morph into fine human beings, just like everybody else.

It's been going on for centuries. Even I have yankee forebears. (Not to mention my wife!)

The plumber--fortunately--left New York because he hated woke, leftist, sick, disgusting, Democrat Party, decadent, anti-America, insane policies and what they were doing to his children. When I learned this, I knew there was hope for him and decided to just to be patient and wait for the metamorphosis. It was not terribly long in coming.

The ones we do not want are the ones who bring wokism with them and vote for the same evil that drove them out of New York in the first place.

Looks to me like the husband wanted to move and she really had not much choice. Perhaps her health and finances required the move but also many other considerations are not mentioned. Bottom line is what it is. If she and her husband do not help each other to work out an arrangement acceptable to both, neither will be happy. Of course the state of Fla is not her problem. I love to visit my relatives and family in Fla but do not want to live there. Nor any other state than where I am now. I hope the lady finds peace but her husband has to help.

Fort Lauderdale then had a lot more French-Canadians visiting from Quebec than New Yorkers.

So they had cream cheese and smoked fish on a croissant instead of a bagel? Seems like every restaurant advertised themselves as "new york style" something or other.

Had a blast though, my wife and I went to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight. That was worth the trip.

Wonder what she misses about NY other than the BF? She could always make a new friend or friends if she tried.

There are a bunch of nice things about Florida, but there a bunch of crappy things too. The landscape is rather flat and boring, and it gets too hot in the summer. But in the winter time it is great.

True. This is why all of us don't live in the same state. Depends on what you like. My antipathy for Florida as it is now does not imply criticism of those who do like it.

As a USMC kid I lived up and down the east coast. 4 seasons in NC & VA. When dad retired in 1965 we moved to Orlando. Central Florida was a great place in those days for a teenager - well for any age. However, the arrival of Disney made a major contribution to the already rapid growth that was beginning to metastasize. Growth ruined Florida from a quality of life perspective - for us at any rate. As life goes, job, mortgage, kid and simple inertia kept us there for too many years more than we should have let happen.

As a teenage male, I loved the beach and the honeys. After marriage and kids, I liked it because it was so much fun with the kids. Once the kids grew up, the beach bored me to tears. And the traffic (nightmare!). You know it's bad, but you really don't conceive of just how bad until you get away from it for a few years and then go back. I visited my brother about 4 years ago (north side of Orlando area). Yikes!

. When moving to a different environment, take your time, do your research and be sure of just what it is that you believe you really want.

Snowbirding. It’s a sensible alternative for people who can swing it. Some parts of Florida, or so people say, are filled with Canadians in the summer.

When I was a kid and we’d watch TV shows where a character is offered a big promotion or a great new job and they turn it down to stay with their friends, I thought “What an idiot! Take the money!” I don’t think that way anymore.

People are attached to the places they grew up and the friends they’ve made, even if the place looks awful to us. It doesn’t have to have anything to do with politics. It’s understandable, and laudable, and a good thing. Otherwise, they might all move to the place we think is the best and raise prices.

She should either visit her friend in NY, and/or pay for tickets for her friend to visit her in FL, a few times a year. A lot cheaper than moving again.

I think she can’t because her husband doesn’t care. He yells and walks away. She’s stuck in a place that is not home to her.

I'd bet she badgered him into moving down there, now she wants to leave.

There’s a reason why the Carolinas are filled with halfbacks. New Yorkers move to Florida but can’t stand the long summers so they move halfway back up north.

Our family lived on Maryland’s Eastern Shore for 18 years. The heat, mosquitos, and humidity were horrific! It started in mid-March and wasn’t reliably gone until the end of October.

I am sooooooo glad to be out of that state!

We lived in Woodbridge, VA 59-63 when dad was at the Pentagon.
Quantico & Lejuene prior to that.

Went back to Woodbridge in 2000 for a look at the old house etc. Much changed and none of it for the better.

She should stay with her friend in NYC from November to May and join her husband in Florida from June to October. That way she would get the best weather both places have to offer.

And her husband would get a break from this lunatic for half the year.
