What was Dachau like? I mean, certainly it was evil. Is it a large area of barracks , the gas chambers and all?
What was Dachau like?

When the American soldiers of the 45th “Thunderbird” Division stumbled upon the death train, it was like lighting a fuse that couldn’t be snuffed out. The men of the 45th had been in combat for 500 days and thought they had witnessed every grisly atrocity that war could throw at them. But then there was this train filled with innocent bodies, their eyes and mouths open as if crying out for mercy. Many of the American soldiers broke down in sobs. Others seethed with red-hot rage.
When four German officers emerged from the woods holding up a white handkerchief, Lt. William Walsh marched them into one of the box cars littered with corpses and shot them with his pistol. When the mortally wounded Germans cried out in agony, other American GIs finished the job.
Went to Dachau twice, with parents and then in-laws. I remember that there was heavy fog on one trip. It was very eerie, getting ready to go in looking at the guard tower, like i was in a movie kind of like i had been transported back in time. Walking past the ovens, the shower rooms. I think there was just one barracks standing. The long bullet pockmarked wall. I took a picture of the main gate “Arbite Mach Frie” Spelled out in Black Iron scrip. A testament that the anguish and horror was all to real.
Yes it is. They have a nice museum there and some nice memorials. Some “barracks”. “Shower” house and the ovens. I visited it twice when I was stationed at Augsburg in the 70s. I wish everyone could visit that place. Especially the far-left holocaust deniers. If you go there, you will “Never Forget”. I can’t believe human beings could be so cruel.
