What was Dachau like?

Depends on the viewpoint. I always found the soldier perspective worthy of thought. If I remember correctly, these soldiers were charged with war crimes, but Patton lost the paperwork.

When the American soldiers of the 45th “Thunderbird” Division stumbled upon the death train, it was like lighting a fuse that couldn’t be snuffed out. The men of the 45th had been in combat for 500 days and thought they had witnessed every grisly atrocity that war could throw at them. But then there was this train filled with innocent bodies, their eyes and mouths open as if crying out for mercy. Many of the American soldiers broke down in sobs. Others seethed with red-hot rage.

When four German officers emerged from the woods holding up a white handkerchief, Lt. William Walsh marched them into one of the box cars littered with corpses and shot them with his pistol. When the mortally wounded Germans cried out in agony, other American GIs finished the job.

Yes I read many accounts of the liberation of Dachau.

There's an excellent site on You Tube called “Critical Past’’. It's US Army Signal Corps footage from various locations that was filmed in Germany in the closing months of the war.

There is one video of the liberation of Dachau, complete with scenes of that long line of train cars, some of them open Gondola cars filled with dozens of poor souls who either froze to death or died of disease or wounds.

In one scene there is an American soldier with a .45 in his hand herding four SS men, the one's you describe towards a box car and then the film cuts out.

Good for the SS bastards.

No SS trooper, Waffen SS or the “Totenkopf’’, they one's who ran the camps should have ever been taken alive.

The SS was a criminal organization that fought deliberately and purposefully outside any known rules of warfare. The SS guards at Dachau and else knew they were dead meat when the were caught. The Russians routinely shot them. In fact the Russians pretty much shot every German they got a hold of.

The 45th Thunderbird Division was Oklahoma National Guard, heavily numbered with white depression babies and Native American badasses. Also some from eastern New Mexico.

Very bad news for the Krauts, especially the ones at Dachau who thought they could exploit their Christianity by running up a white flag.

They had it coming. Same for the murdering assholes at Buchenwald.
