I think it’s a trap. If this is really going to happen, the left must know that it would only encourage support for Trump, even among people who can’t stand him. That would mean that he would be the candidate, and thus represent an easy victory for the Dems. So that’s possibly why they’re doing it.
If they actually are doing it. Remember, the first news of this came from Trump himself.
There are also two separate things going on, one at the NYC level and one on the federal level (I think to be announced next week).

Trump just beat the media to the punch. The media was going to be positioned to film it, just like CNN did with Roger Stone.
They planned on making this a big "we're saving democracy!" arrest and media push next week. The media was going to make this a big "win" for democracy, while shilling for the tyranny to come.
Trump spoiled that for them. Smart move on his part. Now there's time to plan a response as opposed to getting caught off guard.
