England's green and PLASTIC land: The new-build estate where the garden of every home is carpeted with fake grass that 'poses risk to pets and children'

EXCLUSIVE: Every home on new-built estate appears to have a fake plastic lawn at the front and back While low-maintenance, campaigners warn chemicals and plastics are dangerous to wildlife and children READ MORE: How to grow the garden of your dreams - Monty Don share his tips

Row after row of neat little houses with their green grass lawns that will forever remain perfectly trimmed...

At first glance they appear like the miniature homes of a carefully manicured model village. But these are real properties in a brand new estate in Hampshire.

Moneyfield Mews in Portsmouth is a brand new development on top of a former football field that has plastic grass at both the front and back of every single property - and it's claimed the 'homeowners have no choice'.

The four-bed semi-detached properties come with a hefty price tag of around £550,000 - but their new owners can at least save some money by not forking out for a lawn mower.

Residents in the houses nearby already have mixed views on the new estate and its fake grass, with some saying it 'looks quite nice' while others suggest they would 'have it all ripped up'.

In recent years, artificial grass has moved well beyond sports pitches and into homes across the coutnry - with more than eight million homes installing it over lockdown, many homeowners swayed by influencers like Mrs Hinch and Love Island stars.

And developers have cottoned on too, opting for shrubless, bland gardens that offer little benefit to wildlife.

In UK -— “garden” means your backyard and front yard. Lawns, flowers, shrubbery, trees.

It sounds like peaceful village. Does Number 6 live in this village?

I did as well. My old one lasted nearly 10 years, but the axle/transmission went awry. Almost as expensive to fix as buy a new one. Better to get one before the EPA bans them.

So much for those beautiful, old English cottages covered with wildflowers.

I love that new lawnmower feel! Almost as good as getting a news car. If you accumulate a lot of grass underneath the deck. Like my last one did. It will rust. Even though I always scraped it clean (plastic scraper) after mowing. Waterproof rubberized sealant (like Gorilla brand) coating underneath should stop this. I will be doing this.

For your common back yard mower. The steel is too thin. And my rusting one. Made from crappy steel. Troy Bilt.

My mower has a tough plastic deck. No rust issues. So far no breakage either.

Didn’t Clinton have some of that in the back of his El Camino?

In Arizona it makes sense, although I’d rather have rock or pebble garden.

But Britain doesn’t have a shortage of rain.

Plastic is so tacky and low rent. No thanks.

Honda makes one with a plastic deck. Is that what yours is? Honda’s is the only one I know of.....

If I went for an astro-turf lawn I would get it in purple just for fun.

Might as well. Ugly is ugly.

My opinion might be influenced by the fact I played football in high school. Astroturf is named such because under the plastic is actual asphalt. Terrible stuff to play on. Hated it ever since.

These days it can be done differently. Some latest model (I presume) astroturf was laid in my local park. Replacing green grass on the field. This astroturf was laid on the existing soil after it was compacted with a small steam roller. So much more cushioning than laying it on asphalt which is supremely dumb and asking for football injuries.

Any NFL teams that deploy AstroTurf. No way is this laid on asphalt.

I will admit it’s been over forty years since I’ve even been on a playing field so I’ll take your word on it it.

I hope so, too!

It was damn disappointing when we first hit the university stadium and started our warm-ups. That’s when I saw a bit of the turf rolled back and saw what we were going to play on. The running track around it was what I was expecting.

I was so relieved to have knee pads and the girdle pads on.

From then on I hated astroturf. Grass is a pleasure to get knocked down, ground into.

That’s the one. The Honda HRX. Pretty good mower. A bit pricey though.

I have grass allergies and hate mowing the yard.

The wife won’t let me burn off the yard. Something about the neighbors and the local government not approving.

She won’t let me put in astroturf. She says she refuses to vacuum the yard.

$829 at Home Depot. No rusting Nexite plastic deck with lifetime warranty! Yours is the ultimate.

The Japanese are so OCD they need a twin blade Honda mower to “emulsify” the grass clippings. The clipping are non- visible within a day. The only hassle is having to sharpen two blades. But at that $829 the sharpness is going to be long lasting. I salute you on buying the ultimate. 200cc engine too. The grass will meet its doom as it gets mulched into fertilizer for your lawn.

There was a used Nexite on Craig’s but 20 miles from me. $390. I did not make it over there to check it out. The guy sounded un-knowledgeable. As though he was selling it for someone else.
