Fishing for Trouble: Chinese IUU Fishing and the Risk of Escalation
U.S. Naval Institute ^ | February 2023 | Commander Jennifer Runion, U.S. Coast Guard

While every coastal state has contributed to the decline of fish stocks to some degree, none surpass China’s impact. The 2019 IUU Fishing Index, which ranks coastal countries worldwide based on their vulnerability to, practice of, and response to harmful fishing practices, listed China as the top global offender, scoring 40 percent worse than the worldwide average. Furthermore, the United Nations found China’s distant-water fleet to have been underreporting their global catch size by a factor of 12. Countries in the Indo-Pacific region have lost patience with these illegal practices and have begun to push back.

Many Chinese-flagged fishing vessels and their crews are members of the People’s Armed Forces Maritime Militia. Beijing describes this organization as “an armed mass organization composed of civilians retaining their regular jobs,” and it is a component of the Chinese armed forces. While members of this force can operate as independent civilian fishermen, it receives special training and funding to support military objectives, provides surveillance and presence, and completes other tasking as requested. Experts believe the Yuemaobinyu 42212 was carrying out this kind of assignment on the night it rammed the Gem-Ver 1. While the overall coordination and direction of the force is poor, militia vessels have been known to serve a “backstop” function, calling in China Coast Guard and People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels if their operations are impeded by foreign authorities.

Argentina simply seizes the Chicom fishging ships, arrests their crews, and then sinks their ships.

Seems to be an effective way of keeping China out of Argentine waters.

Hundreds of thousands of whales used to swim the seas, fertilizing the oceans with iron rich whale poop.

They are gone now. We need to be fertilizing the waters with powdered iron. The one time it was tried in Washington State, the result was a record Salmon run.

Are you certain that was not in one of the 4 year cycles for whatever species of salmon you are crowing about?

As for the Whales here’s where they went:
