Marley was looking pretty lean toward the end...It's possible he was ill with a wasting disease like cancer, or unable to hunt from arthritis. Animals can smell illness, and it makes the kill legitimate in their world.

You’re probably right...he had been attacked before in a weakened state but still fought and drove them off. He really was the “King” til the very end.
