“... salmon fishing in California would be banned for the 2023 season due to a dwindling population....”

I knew the vaccine was taking a huge toll on the population, but I didn’t know it was that bad.

Well hopefully the California Department of Fish and Wildlife are basing this on sound scientific principles.

Iceland almost depleted their cod fishery and took extreme measures to restore the stock of fish. For Iceland a strong fishery is the difference between survival or failure as a nation.

I got this message from a speech by an Icelandic scientist at a NOAA facility where I worked as a microscopist.

It really was a great talk about how Iceland turned their fishery around and now makes quite a profit.

Crap. Of course the drought has played a big part, but seals and sea lion populations have grown out of control. They are having a huge impact, as they swim up river and feast on our fish. Even fishing off shore, no salmon or any fish for that matter, is safe until it’s on the boat.

What is the average cost for such a fishing license here? I am also in California.

The decline of salmon populations anre not due to fishing in rivers, they are occurring out at sea thanks to the Chinese fishing fleet. Nutless California will not be able to do anything against the Chinese because, well, they are useless.

Welcome to the club... Trawlers and fishing vessels from Europe killed Atlantic Canada’s fishing industry decades ago, add to that the uncontrollable seal population (now estimated at more than 10 million seals), that had formerly been culled yearly by a seal hunt that kept the population to a manageable million seals annually, being abolished... And what you end up with at the end of the day is???

No fish.

No salmon fishery, no cod fishery, no fish in general... They just don’t exist anymore in numbers that you can actually fish on a seasonal basis, or god forbid... recreationally.

>> seals and sea lion populations have grown out of control

Can’t you just club them? It’s easy when they’re little.
