The self-proclaimed “greenest member” of Congress is a Republican from rural Kentucky. He lives in an off-the-grid home he built himself, using timbers cut and rock quarried from his family cattle farm. He pipes in water from a nearby pond, and powers the home with solar panels and a battery from a wrecked Tesla that he salvaged and retrofitted.
But while he lives on, and even makes part of his living from, the land, very few people would call him an environmentalist. The car he drives back and forth from Washington has a license plate advertising his support for coal. He likes to lean on his experience as a robotics engineer to argue against precipitously switching over to renewable energy, claiming that rapid changes could crash America’s power grids. And he once mocked John Kerry, who has a degree in political science, in a congressional hearing on climate threats: “I think it’s somewhat appropriate that someone with a pseudoscience degree,” he said, “is here pushing pseudoscience.”
Mr. Kerry stumbled, visibly surprised and angry. “Are you serious? I mean, this is really seriously happening here?”
It was hard to say. From the outside, Thomas Massie can look like yet another congressional gadfly courting controversy by, for instance, introducing a one-sentence bill that would abolish the Department of Education, or posing for a Christmas photo with his wife and children, each of them holding a weapon, from an M60 to an Uzi, or speaking at the 60th anniversary celebration of the far-right John Birch Society.
But Mr. Massie is not just another loony G.O.P. backbencher. Outside the public eye, he has been quietly advancing what for a Republican politician is an unusual set of stances: evincing deep opposition to the national security state, resistance to the influence wielded by corporations....

He is considered one of the best GOP congressman
But interesting he's being profiled in New York Times.
I think its paywalled.
I like Massie and appreciate that he is not a lemming.
Who says NYT is useless?
I didn’t really know too much about him. Sounds like a GREAT guy. And besides, anybody that calls out a twatwaffle like kerry publicly is good shit. Plus, if he’s on the NYT persona non grata list, it’s basically a perfect contrary indicator.
You can’t buy publicity like that. Well done NYT, well done!
Thomas Massie has arrived.
He’s on the failing New York Times hit list.
This man is the second coming of Ron Paul. And what I really like about him, is that he didn’t march in lockstep with Donald Trump. I don’t mind Republicans supporting Trump, but don’t be a sycophant. Real leaders like Trump hate sycophants. Raise legitimate objections to him, like Massie did, and Trump attacked him for it, but notice that Massie isn’t considered a Never-Trumper though. Massie is a brilliant Congressman and he has a bright future ahead of him.
Does the article mention that he has two engineering degrees from MIT?
Yes...he was right. John Kerry has a pseudoscience educaiton, and Massie is actually a scientist. Not just a theorist, either, as his (small, but effective) projects attest.
Massie is obviously not sophisticated like New York Times reporters.
He doesn’t live in a crime-ridden urban jungle, rub elbows with fellow socialists, or worship at the altar of secularism.
“You know you’re over the target when you start catching flak”
I wish they were all like Thomas Massie. It would be a great start!
His place is in the turtle’s seat.
THANK YOU MAP!
Everyone read and digest!
It’s getting more likely.
His profile is way higher than your average congressman and he could have it with little effort.
But the article does mention he may not have senatorial ambitions.
Get a Republican to win for Governor in 2023, someone give Mitch another concussion, and have the new Gov appoint Massie when Yertle is forced to retire.
It’s a nice dream, anyway.
Thomas is young enough he can bide his time...
It’s a dream. Gov Beshear (D) has reelection in the bag.
Thanks for posting this.
And to the NYT(!) for publishing.
Massie’s name has been mentioned a number of times in past
weeks. ALL indications have been he is a strong willed
patriot voicing his support for America and its citizens.
We deplorables appreciate that.
Keep right on trucking, sir.
Since the first time I saw him on Tucker’s show I decided he was the best and one of a handful worth keeping.
He’s my congressman and does a very good job. I’ve seen him drop the ball only once when he opposed Trump’s use of Pentagon funds to build the wall. If Rand Paul gets onboard he’ll be a player to replace that Judas McConnell.
You should see where Massie lives, Lewis County, Ky., God’s country. He’s one county over from my rural Ky paradise.
