There were later reports (which I cannot find now) that Ukraine says they are there to interdict arms smugglers.
There is a humongous ammo dump (half full of dangerous aged stuff) just inside the Transnistrian border guarded by a small detachment of Russian soldiers. Cobasna is a very interesting piece of the puzzle there. See last link in my post here:

The likely plan is that soon Moldova, with NATO supplies, will launch a campaign to retake the Russian occupied parts of their country.
The Ukrainian will defend their side of the border to prevent any of that Russian garrison from being resupplied or escaping.
Yet our young, woke , retreads want us to be something more like the USSR and less like the US in the Roosevelt admin.
It sounds like another Chernobyl waiting to happen.
